New toy
« on: September 23, 2010, 10:40:04 AM »
Hi, my name is Paul and I have picked up a new to me bug.
It is a 74 non-super Beetle. It was bought at auction, restored to driving condition, drivin a few months and parked in a garage since 1989, and here we are.

So I spun it by hand to make sure it wasn't seized, turned nice. So I lubed the cylinders, put the plugs back in and tried jump starting it. It was getting no fuel, so pulled the tank and it was NASTY!! Off to get a new tank (thanks AVR) put that in, and try again.....now it won't even turn over, not with a jump start, not with a new battery??? Any suggestions?

did you check your ignition switch connection? maybe you pulled something when you were swapping your fuel tanks

Wow! a time capsule from the 80's :O0:

You may also want to have a really good look under the cooling tin for rodent nests before you get too far in to it. If the gas was bad you'll also want to change all the fuel lines now.

That is awesome! If it were mine I'd feather my hair, slip on some high tops and and an acid-wash jean jacket and roll around just to see the looks on peoples faces.

Can you still get Vuarnet sunglasses?

Thanks for the tips, I will be messing with it a little more this weekend as time (haha what's that) permits. I intend on changing all the fuel lines, and going through car from one end to the other, but I want to get it running, and go from there. This thing is a real time piece, right down to the etched glass, that's right etched glass ;D Seems to be in pretty nice shape, although now that it is parked in my driveway on a slope, I have some water gathering near the gas pedal, so I will need to address that. As for rodents, etc... doubt I will find much of that as it was in my dad's buddy's workshop garage that was heated and quite clean, not that that means much, but I'm pretty sure there is nothing there, haven't any signs of anything yet anyways.

keep ya posted

P :O0:

Well, as it sits I can't find any wires that are not connected, and it still won't turn over.......will keep you posted...still following wires. I really think it will be something totally stupid, as it should just be a dissconnected wire. I moved my gas heater to remove my fuel tank and just layed it accross the top behind the dash (where all the wires are) so I'm sure it must have to do with that...we'll see. Other than that, nothing has been touched, and it turned over before the fuel tank was removed  wtf

Well good news bad news again.....the seat belts done up and it will turn over. Not only will it turn over, but with gas in teh carb it runs!! Only problem is, I had thought I could blow air through the gas line from the tank.....wrong....plugged line....back at it I guess, but it's getting close

paul

ps, thanks for the seat belt tip
