Buying A Type 3
« on: December 19, 2005, 07:45:12 PM »
Hey guy, my sister is looking at a 73 fastback in \"Daily Driver\" condition, apparently it runs fine but needs new brakes.  I'll be going to take a look at it tomorrow.

They say it has very small amounts of rust.   Where are that chronic areas?  Any year specific things to look into? Any tips on what to look for?

Thanks Guys!

some of the more common areas of type 3 rust are around the headlight rings, bottom trailing edge of the fenders, and the rear inner wheel arch (under rear seat). hope that helps

even though it's the less desirable late model (pigs nose), it's still a type 3. Go get it.

Any price range for a running daily? Some fender rust?  (just so I can get an idea)

That's a tough one to call. Get some pictures and some good info on it, and I'm sure there is a price range to be found.

well this car looks pretty good from what i can tell from your pics, doesnt look like to much rust, i would check the rear motor mounts and braces,  and would check the bumper mounts aswell, like matt said check the ussual places as well, does this car have a gas heater, i see the switch, i dont know how much it is worth, hard to tell without looking at it in person. does it run,  i would also check behind all the beading too, but does not look like a daily that is for sure

I'm not DVKK but I'm going to throw in my 2 cents because I own 2 of these cars, including a 73 fasty which I drive every day which I'm comparing this car to.

I'm not trying to talk anybody out of buying this car but here's what I think.

Those are some good quality pics and they say a lot
Not too sure about that \"daily driver\" status though.
There are a few scary things going on with this car as far as I can see:

- The bondo-over-rust that's happenin' on the rear sail panel
See how much is bubbling up underneath it? That looks pretty damned ugly but it's a little tough to tell from the picture exactly HOW bad it is. May be worth looking in to because it could be minor.
- Have a look at the pic of the gas tank. Under the filler hose is some nasty cancer bubbling through. Keep that noted and check the other side - esepecially under the brake-fluid resevoir.
- What's with the plastic bag and duct tape over the throttle body?  Trying to keep the rats out of it?
- Seeing as \"it needs brakes\" and there's a tarp over it, it's probably safe to say it's been stored for a while and will likely need much more than brakes. Does it run?
- Why is the interior torn out of it? Is it all still there?

On a plus side, the electrical seems in order as far as I can tell. Nothing in the engine bay has been hacked up. The original FI is still intact

Assuming the motor checks out (compression), the interior is put back together and the car is  a runner I'd say it would be worth no more than $1500 (stretching it in my opinion) assuming it only needs new brakes and such. You have to look beyond the red paint and shiny black floor pans with this car. I paid $1500 for my daily-driven 73 Fasty in June. It's never been hit, never been modified (until i owned it), never been raped or had shitty bodywork done, the fuel injection works flawlessly, i'm the second owner, and I drive it ALL the time. Sure mine is rusty as hell but it drives like a brand new car and I can fix rust - eventually.

Having said that, the car does look very solid. You'd have a hard time convincing me it's a daily driver though based on what you've said and the pictures. If you're going to check the car out again, have a really good look at the rocker panels too.

There's an ass for every seat, just make sure you don't sit on your wallet.  :D

Happy hunting  ^_^

i know where that car is. it has been sitting in that yard for 2/3 years, so i would be guessing the likelihood of daily driver status.

i'm not a t3 guy, but it looks like it needs some work. if your sister is looking for a hop in and go mobile, then it seems like this would not be it.

good luck and pm me if i can help you out at all.

a daily driver its not. but with a bit of work it could be. Did it run when you where there? are all the missing parts from the pics included with the sale? How much does this guy want for it? The pic that shows the drivers side floorpan and rocker, is that bubbling on the rocker or just a funky picture??

Thanks for the awesome input guys!  I appologize for the late responce, Its busy busy Christmas time.

I appologize I didn't meen to imply it is a daily, just that my sister is looking to sure it as one.  Yes, the car has been sitting for approx 3 years, it was/is owned by a friend of hers.

Gutterslug, the interior is pulled out and stored indoors so it will not grow moldy.  It is complete as far as the owner has said.

The bag is over the intake for reasons unknown to me, it was apparently started and running durning the summer, just to ensure it could.

They are asking for 2600 (which I do think is totally over priced)

Thanks again guys.
