Anybody have any tips for removing 40 year undercoating from inner fender wells and inside of fenders?

I want to clean up and re-spray semi-gloss black.

Aircraft paint stripper, scraper and a wire brush. HAVE FUN!!!!

Use a heat gun and a scraper. It's a terrible job, but this is the method we had the most success with. :wacko:

2\" putty knife & a small hand held propane torch.

heat the area in front of, but not directly on, the putty knife. dont heat it up too much or it turns to goo. use the putty knife to follow the trail of the previously heated area.

this is the method i used on the pans and fenders on my 56. it took a little practice to dial in the proper technique, but it ended up working fairly well.

also, watch the amount of heat or the paint on the other side of the fender will bubble.

Thanks guys,

I almost discovered the heat method myself last night. I tried the wire wheel on a 4\" girder and it made a huge mess, but the area around (heated area) came off quite easily. 1 wheel well down, 3 to go and 4 inner fenders.

there is atool for this you can buy from kms, it is called a descaler, it is a air tool with pins on the end , it works great , just did 2 55 chevys , with realy bad undercoating
