Modified collector plates?

Anybody jumped through the hoops to get modified collector plates for their pre 58 car? I dont think ill be wanting to drive my car to work and leave it to get shit on by seagulls and having it insured year round for under $300 sounds kinda awesome.....plus the black and white plates suit a vintage car waaay better!

Wondering if anybody has any tips or advise to make the whole process easier to get through? I just printed off the forms this am, looks quite involved?

Hi Josh, while I don't have modified collector plates, I do have collector plates
On my car.  I recommend just following the instructions from ICBC, and make sure to have your car professionally appraised, get declared value insurance from Hagerty

Right on, ive been researching it all morning and only thing that has me concerned is having to drag the car through a VI....I was stoked to find out my car was still in the system and didnt require a provincial...not that im worried about it passing or not but last one I had to get on my 57 had me sweating bullets!

 Couldnt find a shop that would do a vw here and ended up at Cambodian tire, I know I know!  he wouldnt let me drive it up on the lift and insisted that part of the inspection was the mechanic driving it? You kinda gotta know whats up to climb behind the wheel of a 200hp NA dub.....2 stage/4 puck is a bit of a switch and I was envisioning my baby being launched off the hoist!

The 55 is 10x the car and im just a little over protectively anal about it :098:

ah... whats a modified plate? i know about the collectors plate and am sure my car would not qualify as it has noticeable mods. does anyone here actually have one and know whats allowed?

Ya they pretty sticky about the stock ones.....basically same rules as condition but mods are allowed

hey thanks,didn't know of this plate til now.still out however as its a 67 which is so very vastly different from a 58.

you do not need heat, u need defrost.... plug a cheap electric fan and aim at window, that passes and i have used it before.

That didnt get picked up when I took my 57 through....definitely didnt have defrost in that one either.

Steve, did what you speak of have a heater built in or just the fan moving air good enough?

Josh the biggest problem is the value and havings bills to back it up. Like most of us we do your own work and pay cash for lots of our parts. ICBC is going to want a value and if you go privite for the coverage they are going to base the cost of insurance based on your value.

I think a good person doing a valuation will cost you @$300, I know Hagerty wanted one to give you real replacement value coverage....

although it says for a windshield wiper, they may twist it...

(3) A motor vehicle other than a motorcycle equipped with a windshield shall also be equipped with a device which is effective for clearing rain, snow or other moisture from the windshield.

I'd argue that was talking about wipers!


I had minimal bills for my 57 when I wrote it off, all parts no labour. No appraisal, ICBC hired a 3rd party to do one and it came it very much in my favour...in the end I walked away happy.
I think I still have the name of the guy, ill have to look.

On the VI I really think its all about who you get and how they interperet the rules......sucks but can also work in favour somtimes

I took it lowered.

Josh I think it is true to the fact it just depends who you get and that you are reasonable about the value. ICBC was OK with the value I put in after I explained the work done without bills. Hagerty also was OK with the value I put down even without an appraisal of the car.

The Regs are very general.  I called CVSE in Victoria which oversees the program and the inspectors.
 
Section 8-14 of the inspection manual says the defroster has to operate as it was originally intended (I'm paraphrasing).  If a defroster was not originally manufactured into the vehicle (my buggy) none is required but the Regs still apply in that anything on the windshield may not impede the vision of the driver. A fan that provides the same effect may be ok.  There appears to be some subjectivity on the inspector's part in determining adequate airflow.

On a stock car it can be failed for a tear in the seat or a missing knob on the window crank. Its almost not worth being in the designated inspection facility world. Makes rule followers look like jackasses for being accurate

isn't the inspection just for safety items, not a pick apart on a tear? I thought the photos you sent in were the final determining factor on whether you got plates or not?

Says you have to have a current saftey insp. Done on it first.

The window crank is required so that you can whip the window down to signal if your indicator lights go out.  If the inspector fails you for a broken window crank on the right side, he's a ignorant dick.
I had the inspector at C tire tell me a tear in the headliner is a fail.  Again, an ignorant dick.  The requirement is that the headliner can't be shreaded so that it hangs down obscuring your vision anywhere.
