And does this "Vehicles, boats and aircraft acquired from private individuals or non GST registrants (purchased or received as a gift)" mean you can't gift vehicles anymore? So if I give the bike to my wife, she has to pay PST???

be happy we are not the same as Germany where they pay close to %25 VAT on used vehicles!  It just means bull shitting the prices that little bit more to offset the Government's greed.

For a gift, I guess 12% on a value of $0 is still $0, or would they try to figure out a book value of the gift and tax it on that?

That is what I'm wondering.

from the pdf  "12% of the fair market value if received as a gift". Not sure what BS they use to establish "fair market value"

It just means bull shitting the prices that little bit more to offset the Government's greed.

Does anyone know what happens when you have an insurance claim? Adjusters can be really sneaky about values.

what you buy the car for doesn't reflect on the value of it in the market.

I went way out of my way when this all started, to get the inspection done and pay my PST before the HST came in. I had already paid the GST at the border and could see the troubles coming if I didn't get it done before the HST started. Glad I did! ;)

I would believe that if you have a reciept for the GST already that they adjust for that when paying PST today.  I had a situation where that was the case.

I can confirm what Alp said.
I have a car I bought in the early 90s when the PST was 5%.  Years later when I finally got around to transferring it into my name, the PST was at 7%.  I had the signed paperwork from when I bought the car, so the autoplan agent charged me tax at 5%.

Has anyone had any experience with the new dated transfer papers? I have had agents telling me they are only good for six months, and asking if I can get a current transfer paper signed by the registered owner.

I've had ignorant insurance agents tell me all sorts of stupid stuff.
The transfer papers I processed were about 12 years old.  It's a legal document.  Legal documents don't expire.  Try another agent.  Or tell him the previous owner is dead.

X2. I've had an agent a few years back trying to convince me(with a great self-sense of authority, no less) that when you import a car from out of province/country, the previous owner has to personally come into ICBC office to sign papers. Some ICBC agents take human idiocy to a whole new level. Conversely, a knowledgeable one is worth his/her weight in gold.
