Oversize door hinge pins.
« on: June 06, 2011, 02:57:06 PM »
Need to put larger hinge pins on the beetle.

Hinge pins are 8.1mm diamter which seems like an odd size to get a matching drill bit for.

Any suggestions?

An "O" bit is 8.0264mm, which I would bet since you're hand-drilling it will end up being right for your 8.1 bushings.

But it would appear that 8.1mm is relatively easy to obtain drill bit size.

Don't you have a spare in your "Bin O Tools"?

I guess I will mic the pins first to see if they actually are 8.1mm.  The stock 8mm ones are around 7.85mm according to my crappy tire micrometer.

I think I've got 2 or 3 "O" bits, Ti coated, brand new. But no 8.1mm :P

Hinge pins require a reamer not a drill bit to make the hole larger for OS pins. Go to your local machine shop supply store, they can get what you need for the size of pin you are installing.
