« on: April 03, 2011, 05:13:26 PM »
who else has an oil temp guage in their beetle? what sort of temps do you see in the summer? last year i hit over 270f going uphill, but the air temp was in the mid 40s (celsius).

i should also add that in the summer in the okanagan i rarely ever see the oil temp go below 220f even when just cruising around and i'm sure i could easily push it over 300 if i just said fuck it and kept my foot into it

Lets hear a bit more about your engine and gauge.
Who made the gauge?
Where is the sender mounted?
What oil are you using?
Any modifications to your engine?
What distributor and how is it timed?
If you have a doghouse cooler is the Hoover bit in place and intact?
Aftermarket shroud?
RUST NEVER SLEEPS

ok, its a vdo guage with the sender on the oil pressure relief valve on the back of the engine ( near the oil pump), i run 15-40 in the shoulder season, 20-50 in the heat. as for the engine, 1641cc, engle 110 w/ straight cut gears, scat counterbalanced crank, berg pump cover w/ full flow filter, bugpack oil pressure boost kit (since new), ported and polished heads (done by a reputable m/c drag race engine builder) also fly cut .040", bugpack street headers w/ mondo muffler, solid rocker shafts w/ stock ratio rockers, k-dog carbs on heavily ported alum. intake manifolds, and a 009 dist running 7 deg at 800 rpm. also running lightened flywheel, teflon wrist pin bushings, got the decklid stand offs, power pulley when its cool, stock pulley when its hot. completley stock tinning w/ good seal around the engine.

the vdo oil pressure guage never goes above 65psi even when its cold ( idles about 50 psi when cold, 25 psi at 800 rpm at 180f)  at 250f i get around 5 psi at idle, at 270f the 3 psi oil light starts to flicker at idle. my vdo cyl. head temp sens. never goes above 200f and its mounted to the center-ish #3 head stud and my spark plugs show perfect mixture.

what else can i  tell you?

The first thing you need to do is calibrate your gauge.  Remove the sender and make up some extension wires for it.  Dunk it in a small can of water and put that can on a hotplate or use a torch to make it boil.  If you don't get somewhere between 205-210ºF, you have an error that you need to take into account.

Next, dump the 20W-50 tar.  That is the number one reason your temps are so high.  Thick oil like that causes higher than stock oil pressures.  This causes the oil to bypass the cooler.  Study the diagram in your Bentley.  10W-30 should be good for at least 20-30ºF drop in temps.

You state you have "stock tin".  Is this genuine VW stuff?

so i tossed in 10-30 as i was told , and all i can say is you are right. oil temp is WAY down and oil pressure is the same when cold. another perk is the engine winds up way faster when i  launch. thanks for the input!! i owe big!!
