If more power is better. Then too much is just enough.
Why do it once when you can do it thrice?

That is one VERY smart girl. If she hadn't pulled the line out of her tank things would have gotten hairy in no time. I bet most people in that situation would have just ran. It's amazing how a tiny bit of static electricity can cause something like that. Really puts fire safety into perspective for people without first hand knowledge/formal training.

Thanks Kirin, I will be using this vid clip when I teach my next fire safety training course.

I saw it on my ranger forums and there has been a lot of discussion about it. James you obviously have the training for it. So please outline what we should do in a similar situation? Obviously avoiding it by grounding out on the body of the vehicle would be better first. Happens to me all the time where I get statically charged by my seats.

Apparently(This is just from what I have read on a intenet forum.. I haven't read the states) but most gas tank fires involve women. The theory behind that was that men don't usually go back to their vehicles for their purses or lean across the seats. This could be complete bull$hit but take it as you will.

I could see that actually Kirin, Static can occur for many reasons, even air blowing by something. When I teach ventilation techniques one of the most important items is a ground strap. If the area being ventilated has an explosive vapour (jet fuel, gas etc) potentially the rushing air out of the tank could cause a static charge and BOOOM there goes the tank. From watching the video I would think that she was building a charge by A ) arranging her clothes and B ) sliding in and out of her vehicle. After pulling her top down the second time the next grounded thing she touched was the fuel nozzle - ARC! That is a prime example why not to talk on your cell while fueling as well.

She couldnt have done much else better in that situation other than not blowing on it :)
All fueling stations have emergency shut offs near each pump, the only other thing she could have done is hit that after removing the nozzle from her car.

Best advice I could give is A ) take a quick look prior to fueling for the fire extinguisher and emergency shut off and B ) fuel the vehicle start to finish, you can arrange your clothes, take a call after.

That video could have easily been a fatality video.

Thinking about this more and now that I have gotten a brain wave.. Now could that have been why they now no longer have the gas triggers that hold the pump on full on?(Know what I'm talking about?) The little flap that goes down and holds the trigger on...

Partly Kirin, I believe they did away with the hold on things because people should not leave the line unattended (in case the automatic shut off doesn't work) and Yes Bugsmell if she had of created an arc prior to going near the nozzle it most likely would not have happened. Next time you fill up watch to see how much vapour is coming back out of the tank/nozzle - deadly stuff.

Funny they were just talking about this on the radio, from what I remember it is kinda a regional thing, most full serve gas stations still have the little flap, but depending on where you live they still have the flap at the self serve stations. I know down in the WA state most of the gas stations still have the flap, of course I always wear my grounding strap when gassing up :D
