Anyone in Kamloops?
« on: August 21, 2009, 10:30:58 PM »
Just made the trek to Sun Peaks, odd vibration on throttle/off and the only thing I can find is a *slight* amount of play in the right side axle / CV's.

Looking for an axle to carry back to Squam with me on Sunday...you know, just in case. Hmmm, probably means I need to buy a triple-square cv socket too.

Check your mounts!

Which mounts am I checking?

Okay, so here are the symptoms...all of which might not be related:

- Left side rear wheel has a light rubbing/squeaking sound at low speeds (like, crawling to a stop sign). Sounds as though I've got a brake shoe spring rubbing and/or something rubber rubbing. The sound is a mix between a spring and rubber sound. heh.

- Rear end has a vibration and light 'whump whump' sound when I lift off the throttle and coast. You can feel the vibration through the floor. It goes away under power, and is reduced significantly under braking. To be honest, I did check if it gets louder or quieter under cornering, but don't remember there being anything significant to report.

- Visual check of the rear end shows nothing out of the ordinary, all CV boots are in good shape. Right side axle has about 1-2mm of play if I grab the shaft and rock it back and forth, left side has zero play. Car sits normal to the ground, engine appears to sit normal to the car.

Other then that, I've been coaching so I haven't had a chance to explore further. Any ideas are welcome and appreciated!

Made it back to Squam in one piece...

by the time we got to the bottom of the Sun Peaks road (30ish km winding down) I was pretty confident in a left rear wheel bearing diagnosis. Sounds like a bearing, gets quiet on right and turns and louder on left hand turns. Play in the right side axle shaft is likely to be unrelated and/or a different problem all together.

Figures the bearing goes right before I NEED the car for a solid two weeks :P

Check your axle nuts.  I've seen them work loose despite being torqued properly and having a cotter pin and they make a noise like you describe.

Well,

I've never had a wheel bearing go that fast on a car before...but that was the problem. New bearings and it's all silent again. I did check the torque on the nut before starting the job, was definitely tight.
