The Next Adventure - Spring Thaw Rally - Start planning!
« on: October 28, 2008, 11:26:47 PM »
Hey guys, consider this our official invite to the Aircooled crowd. Plenty of time to think about getting the car ready!

Following the Beetleball Warwick and I were thinking about how we were hoping for some twistier roads...and wishing the next event was closer. When nothing close by seemed to suit, we started our own :)

The Spring Thaw Rally isn't going to be a race, but it's not going to be a cruise either. It's spirited driving on challenging roads. More info if you click the link.

Just signed up for the email updates.  This gives me 6 months to get my car done.  Excellent idea.

great idea dave...kudos to you and warwick for putting the plan into action. i wish you all the best in a successfull event.

i signed up for email updates and even tho i have trouble deciding if it's underpants first and then pants ;D...i should be able to make this!!!

so is the route top secret? paved or unpaved roads? magnetic or sticker type decals/dash plaques (i would vote for magnetic)? are you going to have some posters for advertising and if so do you need a hand putting some up (i can think of a few places off hand in vancouver that would be good places to post them)?

again, great idea, good luck and keep us posted!!! 8)

Good to hear you guys are as interested as Warwick and I!

The route is definitely going to be secret, but in the interest of being open to everyone we are working to keep the route paved. It's hard, both Warwick and I are ice/gravel rally guys, so we've had to eliminate some awesome roads...but then, we also want this event to have a diverse group of cars. We thing the best way to do that, at least for now, is to keep the roads paved. We are heading out to green-crew the route in a couple of weekends, so any gravel will be clearly listed before entry opens.

We're likely to do sticker-type decals, but you do bring up a good point. Perhaps we'll offer a choice between Magnetic or sticky when you register.

I can teach you a really good trick with stick on decals though...if you first apply it to your buddies t-shirt, and then to the car. They will hold for a weekend but peel off easy without damaging the paint. (90% of the sticky is covered by lint, the rest used to stick to the car). We do that to keep the paint attached to rally cars, which are usually poorly painted.

Posters and Postcards are being printed...so if you want to PM me some locations or an address to send them to, that would be great!

i understand the gravel/paved road dilema. going offroad/gravel road driving is just awesome fun...but i just think there would be more cars participate if it was paved only (myself included, just because my car isnt really set up for gravel).

and the same sort of goes with the magnetic decals. i could see some folks not wanting to put stickers on their car (even when using your trick)...for a bunch of reasons...so magnetic might be a good back-up.

but the above suggestions are just my own opinions and are not meant to be taken as criticism.  ;)

pm sent for suggestions on some places to hang posters.

cheers & good luck!!!

Definitely not taken negatively, it's actually good help!

I mean, I'm the guy who bought a '69 figuring I would work to make it original looking, knowing I could then 'use' my '75 for more abusive purposes. What do I go and do? Oh right, lets drive the '69 like a complete hoon from Long Beach to Las Vegas!

So yes, the reminders that most people treat their classics a little kinder is a good reminder. Don't get me wrong, I care for the mechanicals and cosmetics as much as anyone else here...but I tend to choose stone chips and fun over 'keeping it clean' :)

Thanks Silas!

It's not a matter of if I'll be driving my beetle, but which one! (I love that I can say that).

Warwick will be driving the Mini...but I have serious reservations that my entire April will be spent wrenching on it to get it ready. We shall see...

I'm hopefully going to have my 6cylinder BMW 2002 rolling for this one. Should be fun. Though the car right now is merely a shell... Might be interesting!

Just a quick note for everyone...

Early Entry Deadline Closing Up FAST
Early entries must be received by March 15th in order to qualify for the $325 rate. After that the entry fee goes up to $375. We'll be accepting entries up until April 10th, 2009. The the entry fee includes your hotel room, route book, decals, and a few other surprises.

So far we've got three VW's on the entry list. Anyone want to add a Type-3 or Ghia to the selections?

www.touringadventure.com

If you're worried about being ready, check out some of our other entrants. We have a Porsche 356c that's currently a shell, not even in primer!!

Good call Silas!

We did end up with a pretty strong aircooled contingent. Silas and I will be joined by what seems like the entire Frose Family, as well as a couple of other VW's and Porsches.

I'm working on some of the awards for the event right now. If the aircooled crew wants to get together to pick an appropriate award for our water-cooled friends...perhaps an award for the biggest cooling system failure...let me know!

whooooweeee!!!!

what an amazing weekend. for those that missed it....keep it in mind for next year. it it is an adventure you dont want to miss!!!

huge thanks to dave & warrick for organizing the event. these guys went above & beyond and covered all the bases. all the drivers & co-pilots were well looked after and everything was very well planned and organized.

over-all, the weekend was an amazing, stress-free, relaxed drive down what have to be the most scenic roads in bc. the weather was spot on, the company was friendly, the cars were incredible and the friends that were made and the srories that were forged will be unforgettable.

i'm going to start a thread in the gallery for spring thaw pics. it may take awhile for the ones lori & i took to get up...but there are alot of pics from alot of others too....
