Powdercoating/sandblasting

whats the going rate to have a pan sandblasted and powdercoated ... (the pan is in great shape)
no rust/holes. if there are dents i will fix them.

also where do you guys have this done ?. does anyone have a sandblaster and do this on the side ?. or is the pan to thin for sand ?

airstrip in richmond does sandblasting. they do vw's so they know about the thickness (or lack of) a vw pan. if there is no rust on the pan, a walnut shell blast should clean it up really nice. they will probably want to give it a quick sand blast to give the metal a good \"tooth\" so the primer or paint will take to it. not sure about prices. i would guess $200 - $500. call them. 604-270-7665. talk to jerry. he's the man in charge.

i'm pretty sure someone on here pwder coats. r. scott or pointblank? i'm not sure. hopefully they'll chime in.

I believe that walnut blasting is fairly inexpensive.

i know por-15 is a good product, but is it as good as powdercoating ?

to por the pan will be cheaper but once you really calculate everything its not much of a difference.

i know poweder coating is heavy duty and very long lasting and its probably the route im going to take.

any thoughts?

There's a shop out in Abbotsford just off Mt. Lehman.  They are equipped to do pretty big jobs.  I dropped off a couple of wheels and they cleaned them up for me.  Wasn't going to take any money because all the original powdercoating didn't come off but I was more than happy with the results.  Had to force money on the dude so that tells you they are not in it to suck $$$ out of you.  BTW, my buggy wheels turned out great shot with white IMRON 5000 at my work.

We talked about powdercoating.  I mentioned I had two sets of wheels done plus some nerf bars some 10-15 years back and I wasn't impressed with the adhesion.  He explained to me that there are different powdercoating processes depending on the intended use and the materials have also evolved considerably over the years.  Today's products are even tougher and they powdercoat industrial equipment with the stuff.

Just a follow up.....Lonestar ain't there anymore. The new Name is Mr. Sandman. I stopped in and talked to Troy last week and he said he would do a pan for me for about 125-150 depending on how much undercoat is on it, he said it would probably take about an hour.

I then called a couple of D.I.Y. blasters, the place on Langley bypass only does small stuff 4x5 was the biggest, at a cost of $50 an hour. There is also a place in South Langley called Canadian Auto Restorations, they set you up outside and let you blast to your hearts content, at a cost of $45 an hour.

Turns out it takes a bit longer then an hour for someone that has never done it before. It took me 3 hours to do the pan and two late bus bumpers, at a cost of $135 cash.
I think next go around for me I will have Mr.Sandman do it, about the same in dollar value but actually doing the blasting kinda sucks!

If you're going to go to the trouble of sand blasting a pan, just get it powdercoated and skip the POR 15.  POR 15 is great if you just want to paint over the rust and crap that's already there, but it will never look as nice as powdercoating.  I was just in at Concept-1 as Ken had just returned from the powdercoaters and I was flabbergasted at the colours you can get.  Bass boat metal flake purple was my fave.   :lol:

I tried to find a picture of my pan once the POR 15 was done, but I'll have to check at home.
