Re-finishing Sprint Stars

Does anyone know the process for refinishing steel sprintstars w/ chrome and paint. Do they chrome the entire rim then remove chrome and paint? Has anyone had this done? Where?

Thanks
Mike

Wheels need to be split, (have the outer hoops cut off) then chrome the center and weld into the old re chromed hoop or better replace the hoop with new. Gav did it with the ones I sold him.

hey mike, i know david mayes (oregonian) helped restore thorntons (another oregonian) sprintstars back to better than new condition. i think the set ended up selling for over 5 grand, so they were worth it.

maybe drop him an email or pm and ask him some questions. even tho he's a little further south, maybe it would be worth it to get him to do them.

click the link below for his info...

Hey Mike, here is what I did to mine...

Like G said, take the rims to Greens Auto in Rich, have them cut the centers out. Then have the two pieces chromed separately as you will get a better chrome job. Make sure to use a good chrome shop as the wheels get a fair bit of abuse. And the last thing you want is to ruin the chrome after all this work of refinishing. While they are still apart, if you are going to paint detail in inset sections, this is the time to do it. Then once they are painted, take them back to Greens and have them re weld them back together. Greens did an awesome job on mine and highly recomend.

Also when you have the centers put back in you can choose to move your offset a bit if you want. Then if the hoops are bad, just buy a set of stock steelies and use the hoops from those as they have the same drop center. If you do buy new hoops, depending on what size they are you can buy 2 x 4.5\" hoops to run on the front so you have the 5.5's out back and the 4.5's nicely tucked up front.

2 of my hoops were scrap so I bought 4.5's for the front and had them move the offset all the way out so the wheels would tuck in deeper while still using a stock width beam. Here's some pics:
Here is the rear, you can see I kept the stock deep dish:

Here is the front. I changed to 4.5 wide (to fit the 135's better) and you can see I moved the offset as far out as I could so they tuck in deeper:

Good luck with yours...

Hey Gav what did they do after rewelding the rims together? are they just painted to protect the welds from rust?

Thanks Gav and Silas,

A couple more questions. Do they weld back together? The chrome survives this ok?

Thanks for the tips on adjusting offset, I better do a test fit prior to getting them put back together.

Cheers
Mike

G-logger - I think I can thank little Geoffy for that nice surprise. I kind of like the picture of his girlfriend...

Russ - Once they were back together I had the whole inside painted soft grey to protect from rust.

Mike - chrome is not harmed at all when welded in.
