Violent Front Wheel Shake?!?!
« on: August 29, 2006, 09:08:43 PM »
well i have a problem with my baja that scared the crap outa me this morning.  i hit a small pot hole and the car started shaking really bad the steering wheel wanted to jerk back and forth and it felt like the front tires were gonna fly off!!!.  as soon as i slowed down to 20ish the shaking stopped and the car drove normally until i hit another small bump in the road with my front right, the car procedeed to do the exact same thing.

the car is a 72 vw baja bug with a ball joint thing front end, could this be bad wheel bearings? steering stabilizer?  the tires are showing 30 psi and the lugs are torqued.  anyone got any ideas?  -Thanks Ty-

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say steering stabalizer from what you've mentioned. Been there done that  :mullet:

worn tie rod ends, worn ball joints, worn bearings, worn steering stabilizer, check it all, better safe than sorry!

I'd say steering damper. Which is what I call them, steering stabliser is probably the same thing. This is the only part I have replaced on my bug, everything else is original. From what you say sounds like the problem I had when I first bought mine. (Although yours seems to be a very bad case of it)
