hey matt (or anyone eles)...would you know if the swing tranny would be the same as whats in my 72 (its a stock swing as well). when ever i order parts for my tranny i always have to guess because my car isn't "supposed" to have a swing in it (canadian bugs only were supplied like this so i've been told). if they are infact the same it would be nice to have a spare tranny to build up for the 2276 insted of blowing the one i got now then re-building later. thanks

It will bolt up I'm sure. as for gearing.....I haven't the foggiest idea. it does have 5 bolt drums so you would have to change those.

Your 72 swing axle will be almost the same as a 72 IRS trans.
It will have a 4.12 R&P, while Matt's will have a 4.37.
Matt's takes a 6V starter, and the bellhousing doens't fit a 12V flywheel without clearancing.
Like James said, your trans will have long axles, Matt's will be short.
The 72 will take the later TO bearing.

wow..thanks for all the quick replies guys!! a few more questions then....are the cases basically the same (i know the bellhousing has been mentioned, same with the TO shaft...but side plates, and other misc items?). could i simply take my tranny out and put this one in if desired without many mods? also what are the benifits to running short axles besides having the tire's that much closer to the car there for being able to run beefier tire's without rubbing (or is that it)?? an auto 12v starter will bolt into the 6v no prob right?? the only difference is the starter bushing? which tranny would be stronger/better geared for going in a straight line? well thats about all i can think of now. thanks again guys  B)

As well as the different TO bearing, the 72 has a bigger pinion bearing.  I prefer this bearing instead of the early one, since its bigger in diameter, and longer than the early one.  Being bigger it should be able to take more abuse before pounding out the bore in the case.  That being said, the early ones do work fine in high perf applications.  Geoff has the tiny one in his car.
A 72 will have fine tooth gears, the 64 will have coarse tooth gears.
72 with 4.12R&P:
3.8
2.06
1.26
.89

64 with 4.37R&P
3.8
2.06
1.32
.89

Both have the weak 10 tooth mainshaft that must be changed to a 9 tooth if an engine is 2275 with slicks.
The 64 may have a steel 1-2 shift fork, the 72 will have a weak brass one.

The 72 gets a backup light switch.

There are also lots of other minor details that are different.

Tire clearance and brake size are the only two functional differences between long and short axle transmissions.  The long axles in the 72 take the larger 68-up rear brakes.
