Stock Motor Challenge
« on: August 14, 2006, 12:02:19 AM »
attention owners of acvw's with stock motors. beetles, ghias, notches, squares, fastbacks, busses, single cabs, westies, buggies, rails...

i am encouraging you all to bring your acvw's out to mission raceway this friday the 18th to participate in the stock motor challenge. this will be a good way to get some more vw's on the track and also give the owners a chance to take some runs down the 1/4 mile.

rules...

- must run a stock displacement motor
- no turbos or nos
- must make at least 2 passes (the more you make, the better chance you have at winning)

to pass tech you will need...

- lap belt
- battery hold down
- back seat over the battery (beetles)
- no more than 12\"s of rubber fuel line
- no hubcaps
- all your lugnuts torqued to spec
- pants, shoes, and long sleeve shirt (no shorts, sandals, or wife/husband beaters)
- no plastic or glass fuel filters (airspeed sells billet aluminum fuel filters for cheap or you can just run hose directly from the fuel pump to the carb...as long as you dont have more than 12\"s total rubber line on the car)

more tech specs here...

http://www.missionraceway.com/mrprules/06f...fridayrules.htm

i'm sure we'll all get through tech fine. just say that you have a stock motor and that you dont expect to run anything faster than 20 seconds.

also, from the mission raceway website...

Quote
Friday Night Street Legal Spectators and Racers:

Gates open at 4:30 p.m., racing starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at approx. 11:00 p.m. (weather permitting).

Spectator admission - $5.00

Racer admission - $25.00 (includes car & driver)

Children 12 and under always FREE with an adult

Parking always FREE

Please note that tech cards will be sold from 5:00 p.m. until dark, or 7:30 p.m. (there is a 225 maximum count on race car entries).

No spectators are permitted to park in the Pit area.

NOTE: All above prices are in Canadian dollars. These prices apply to regular events only and prices are subject to change. We welcome all American visitors and racers. All prices include GST unless otherwise specified.

prizes and bragging rights for...

- best reaction time
- fastest mph
- lowest et

i will have a chart with all the entrants names and car #'s on it and after each run it is the drivers responsibility to bring their time slip to me so i can record all the info needed.

if you arrive late and want to join in, find me and we'll get you signed up. remember tho, you must be able to make at least 2 passes to qualify for prizes & bragging rights.

i have wanted to try out the 1/4 mile for quite some time. i figure this weekend is as good as any to try it out. i encourage anyone interested to join me. the more acvw's we have on that track, the better. the more stockers we have, the more fun this challenge will be.

the most important part of this event is to have fun.

anyone who is interested should reply below so we can start to figure out who's going to show it... B)

Sometimes I get the feeling the whole world is against me, but deep down I know that's not true. Some smaller countries are neutral.

I'll be there Silas so count me in. My fastback's going back on the road on Thursday.
I'm assuming braided rubber hose is OK right? It is factory-spec replacement FI hose .... not that I'm expecting anyone to hassle me with this POS B)

Is it no more 12\" total in the whole car of rubber fuel hose , or no more than 12\" for any one piece of rubber hose ? (12\" for any one piece is the way I once understood it.. but? )

Because every type 1 or 3 etc. probably has close to 12\" of hose under the gas tank alone.

marty - if you're driving your bus down, you should join in the fun.

amish - i think you'll be feeling under the weather on friday. too sick to go to work but just well enough to join us at the races. ;)

1976bus - i looked under the bonnet at the front of my bettle but i couldnt see where the coolant goes. is the overflow bottle hidden behind one of my bumbers?

hans - i imagine it is 12\" total. i could be wrong, but that is what i have heard from bruce & geoff. hopefully you're right. i have called mission and left messages but they havent gotten back to me yet. i have about 5\"s under the tank, another 5\"s at the rear of the tunnel, and about 8\"s from the pump to the carb. so i'm over by a bit, but i cant see tech getting really picky about a few extra \"s.

moni & gutterslug & anyone else concerned about the fuel filters. there are options...

- in beetles you could relocate it to under the car beside the trans where it is hidden
- you could replace it with fuel line (as long as it is approved fuel line it should be safe...braided...rubber...ect)
- you can purchase a billet aluminum filter from airspeed
- or you can tell the tech guys that this is the first and only time you race your car all year and if you raced more often you would definately change it.

i'm really looking forward to this and the more people that jump onboard the more fun and challenging it will be.

Actually its a dish attached to the inside of the front right tire, it uses centrifugal force to retain fluid.

FYI, when I raced my bus 2 years ago it passed tech as is. Important things are battery hold down, dont even bother trying if that is not done. No loose objects in the passenger compartment. No hubcaps, and if your car looks rough expect them to be rough on you about the tech.

mines got duals and that is the only reason im over 12\" in rubber fuel line

does airspeed carry hold downs as well as the fuel filters?

dual carbs are ok. your extra fuel line should be allright. i dont know if airspeed sells battery hold downs but i know they sell metal fuel filters. give them a ring. 604-881-2233.

come on out stockers and let's have some fun. B)

to make it easier for all those people taking part in the stock motor challenge to find me, i will be pitted next to jim martin and his big grey enclosed trailer and green & gold suburban.

this will make for a good meeting place to record times and hang out.

i will be driving my black 64 sunroof beetle.

Whoa there!  What Beetle ever came stock with dual carbs?  Duals would easily give a 20% hp advantage over stockers.  I bet that car also has a tuned 4 into 1 header too?????  Probably an 009 (with a more agressive advance curve) too.

If you are gonna call it a STOCK class, it should be STOCK.

that's awesome carlos.

afaik, when cars are in the staging lanes and getting close to running, you can make a request to the track official (who stands at the front of the line waving the next pair of racers in) to pair up with a fellow racer. just make sure that the two of you are in line together, and the track official will do his/her best to pair you up.

bruce & kevin, i understand what you two are saying. however, the rules state...

Quote
rules...

- must run a stock displacement motor
- no turbos or nos

i have a 009 and header with dual quiet packs on my 64 so i when i was thinking of rules i couldnt rule myself out.  ;)

the way it is now is the way it stands. the #1 rule of this class is to have fun.

if anyone wishes to start another class, i say go for it.

btw bruce, i thought you were going to bring your mexi beetle out for a run?

Stock within reason how's that? Pre-judge all the cars entered before the racing starts and go from there. Sound good?
My car ('73 fastback) is a stock FI'd-motor with 109,752 k's on it and it has a blue coil and a header in case it matters.

there are three rules...

Quote
rules...

- must run a stock displacement motor
- no turbos or nos
- must make at least 2 passes (the more you make, the better chance you have at winning)

the only judging that will take place before entering is to make sure there is no hair drier and no laughing gas. i will take the owners word that they are running a stock displacement motor.

you can run a total gutwagen with slicks, berg 5 speed, stinger, and clear distributor cap if you like. as long as the car is powered by a stock displacement motor with no turbo or nos and you make 2+ runs, we're good to go. B)

i apologize for not being more specific earlier, but it is what it is.

i'm looking forward to this. so far it looks like gutter, carlos, shawn and myself are in.

anyone else? come on people...it'll be fun.

and gutter is the only type 3 so far.

a good mix...but we need more...come on y'all, let's have some fun. B)

an 009 and/or a header does not add that much hp over stock, so including them does not give much of an advantage.

I gotta question why someone with dual carbs would want to call their engine \"stock\".

Wish I could be there...sounds like a good time!

How about posting results here afterwards??  That would be interesting to see the various stock engine combinations and see what differences certain bolt-ons make.

Assuming you're all equally awesome drivers that is!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say because they are not as ANAL as some folk. Quite a few type 3's came stock with dual carbs.

The whole idea here is to give non-Hi performance VW engines a chance at the track. Don't wanna join in on the class, don't. Is this rocket science? no, it's FUN[/size]
