Trip To The Sunshine Coast
« on: July 24, 2006, 06:33:36 PM »
just thought i'd share some pics of the trip to the sunshine coast that my girl & i went on. the farthest i had been prior to this trip was roberts creek. the 101 coast highway is a magnificent drive that winds through dense forests, small mountains, and little communities. definately worth the trip on the ferry and highly reccomended. we'll be going back sometime soon for sure.

on the ferry leaving horseshoe bay...

snickett park in sechelt...just off the 101...

garden bay lake...

madeira park marina...

sundown at davis bay...

in the hills just before the langdale ferry...

thanks chris.

the rack is nothing special. just a well patinaed metal rack that i bought off of rustybus. even tho it adds wind drag and lowers gas mileage, it sure is nice to have the extra room in the car.

Very nice pics Silas! You're right it is gorgeous up here.
We make that trip three or four times a year, but we need to stop and check out the scenery more as we're always in a hurry. Next time you're up if you feel like going a bit further you can catch the next ferry and that will take you here to Powell River. Alot of people do the 'circle tour' ie. up to Powell River, ferry across to Courtenay/Comox, back down the island, and back to Van, or the other way around. It's pretty well a two day trip. My guest room with queen bed and seperate bathroom is here for you or any other ASF members.
Most ASF members don't know us but Paul aka Type2meister and Chris and Gina can vouch for us..I hope  :P
VW people welcome any time. I've got the beer and pickled prawns...mmm taaasty.

thanks for the offer al.

i have wanted to make the round trip to powell river/comox valley/nanaimo/back to vancouver for awhile now. i grew up on denman island and went to school and lived in courtenay aswell, so it would be a good route to take when i want to visit the old stomping grounds. (rather than the old horseshoe bay to nanaimo route).

hey AL. My parents live at Kents Beach Resort just off the ferry from Saltery bay. Beautiful spot. Right on the water. Highly recommended for camping. (Plug) We make it up there about 4 times a year. Well worth the trip. My uncle  owns the property and has had various VW related projects over the years. A VW powered Ford Courior truck. Engine in the back. Pretty wierd. He called it a Vourior. He also made a VW powered wind machine to stoke brush fires after clearing areas of the property for the camp site. I also think at one time he started a VW power girocopter project. Probably a good thing it never got finished. Pretty scary craft.

What a small world Jeremy! I know Kent's quite well. I've been going there with my wifes family for a week for the last nine summers and will be back there in two weeks. We're always in the duplex cabin. I've noticed that Clive has been into VWs, I found a mid 60s panel in the bush, which is still there amongst other things. I thought that wind machine was for a swamp boat kinda thing. I usually spend a little time snoopin around to see what else I might come across. Perfect vacation spot, cabin a few feet from the ocean, father in laws's boat to get some prawns and fish, and best of all hunting in the bush for lost VW stuff.   :)
We also know Dee and Donna, my wife is friends with Donna and I've met Dee a few times. Nice couple.
Next time you're up let me know and I'll come down and say hi.

You betcha Al, I can vouch for you! Al is a gracious host and gives a fine tour of Powell River...highlights include the lake, the old part of town and concrete ships were really cool. Ah, and the blackberry wine is pretty deadly too (maybe shouldn't have let that out of the bag Al?)
Here is a pic from 11 months ago or so when I was last there to pick up my SO-44 from Al:

Al and I will be across the water from each other now as we are moving up to Campbell River in 2 days! I'll let him know about all the bug stuff on the Island and he has to let me know about the bus stuff on the mainland...right AL?

Thanks Paul. It was great having you guys here. Hope your move up island goes off without a hitch. And it was really great to hear you got the Westy on the road!    I know that was no easy task. We'll try to come up and see you in the fall. I'll bring the blackberry wine, which reminds me I'm almost out!
Hopefully you can make it to the GCVWS, and sorry no new bus stuff to report. But I just heard of another place people used to dump cars into a ravine. I let you know if I find anything.
