Guys I need some information, maybe you can help??? We are planning to be in California before we arrive in Canada and are planning ahead as best we can. We are going to need a car and wondered if a car was cheaper in the states or in Canada, I have had a look at some web sites in Kamloops and the states and cant seem to get an idea.

Also what is way cheaper, that you would consider buying if state side.

Can you suggest any car insurance companies in Canada that we could use, and what potental problems can we expect buying a car in U.S and moving it to Canada, is it worth it.

I appreciate that you may not know the answers but thought it was worth asking anyway.

If your looking at a early VW to buy and bring into Canada it's fairy simple and better to find a nice dry one in CA than a BC car. (you will need to fax the paperwork to the border 3 days before bringing it across. It will then need to have a vehicle inspection to make sure it conforms to all the BC laws. If it's say a late model car or new buy it in Canada. As for insurance...... ICBC. you must have insurance thru ICBC here in BC, you can buy basic insurance thru them and the extra from other insurance places (can save some money) or just buy it all from ICBC .

Also beware that you cannot import a car into Canada unless it's the current year model or 15+ years old (maybe 10 I can't remember) so if you bought a car that was only a few years old you would be out of luck at the border.

i assume you are buying a car more than 15 years old right?
when you are doing that bringing it across isnt hard at all, like above said just need the paperwork faxed ahead 3 days for processing at the US border. when you get it across it need the inspection for ICBC to insure it and there are ,lots of places you can get that done

you can bring any car newer than 15 years over the border as long as it was made for the USDM, its also alot more paperwork and very tedious to do than a 15 year old car

All cars have to get basic insurance coverage from ICBC (Insurance Corp of British Columbia) then you can get your collision and ather coverage from a private company. The best thing for you to do is when you come here rent a car to get you to Kamloops then find a car when you get here. You can also try to find one in Vancouver that is a few years old and has to go through Air Care If you are bringing it to Kamloops we do not have air care here. If you are planning on buying in the US I think it would be a lot more paperwork at the border as I donot know what your visa status will be it just seems like more work to start out with

If I got the bug back on the road I will have a little honda civic you could borrow for a few days (depending on when you arrive)

i could be way off the mark, but as Cali is a stop on the way during the Bug Maniac family's immigration to Canada, wouldn't there be issues with insuring the purchased vehicle if they have no fixed address yet? (i'm assuming you haven't bought/found a place yet.) i can't remember ICBC's rules on this, and don't know how it would work with insurance companies state-side.

i'm just throwing this out there as a potential hiccup; anyone enlightened on the subject is welcome to clarify.
