:wacko: we rebuilt the engine and it ran, not well, but it ran
we rebuilt the carb and since then it will not run
we have done the timing, valves, distibutor, wires, rotor, points, spark plugs, it turns over, we have spark, we smell gas, it back fires every now and then.
We have done everything in sequence for a tune up, we have no joy, the engine is not cooperating, we are extremely frustrated and will take it to a mechanic soon, we are very frustrated I suspect we are missing something very small and simple any ideas, anyone willing to look?

What should we do?

maybe your flooding it? if you rebuilt the carb and it does not run now and it ran before you rebuilt it then that would lead me to believe that your problem is with the carb.

What carb? solex 3X? What distributor, and what gap (point, sprk plugs) ?

I would think carb or timming?

I may have a use 28 pict or 30 pict in your vecinity. That may work to test it.

I believe it is a 34 pict 3

Distributor is stock
points and plugs are according to how to keep your bug alive

I do not think we are flooding it but I will test tonight

Sounds like you have the plug wires on wrong or are timing to the wrong cylinder.

If you think you are flooding pull a plug and see if it's wet. Putting your hand over the carb intake while cranking is a good way to give it a major shot of gas if you think it's not getting enough.

So if it won't fire up with the extra shot of gas and you don't find dripping wet plugs the next thing that comes to mind is firing order. #1 is the right front cylinder, put a finger in the spark plug hole and turn the engine clockwise (from rear) until you feel compression (ratchet on generator works good for this), notice which way the distributor is turning as you'll need that for firing order, when the timing mark comes up on the pulley stop and turn the distributor so the points are just opening, put the #1 spark plug wire on whatever hole in the cap the rotor is pointing at and arrange the rest accordingly.

Don't assume the distributor is positioned correctly, start out wherever it ends up and tweak from there.

i cant remember how many times ive put the spark plug wires on incorrectly and it sounds exactly like your describing
check them and then check them again

I had a problem much like that a month ago and the good folks on this sight told me to check my ground wire/s.

Borrowed a distributor from Bugsmell.
she runs intermittantly, she rev's, dies before she stops turning, she rev up again?
Plugged Jets maybe?

how do we clean the carb jets?

What else could it be?

dunk the jet in a container of solvent, then blast through it with a little compressed air, just a wee bit
you can buy a new one too, they're cheap

Checked your fuel pump output?
Float level?
You do have gas in the tank right?

Yes we have gas.

Fuel out put ? How to check and check for what? We pulled the fuel line off the carb and it shot fuel to the other side of the engine compartment. The float lvl is correct according to our rebuild instructions and the float operates freely. We pulled the carb off last night and My son will clean it at BCIT today. Tonight we should know if that was the problem.

We put the old distrubutor on last night and it runs the same as with the one we borrowed, so that eliminates the dist as the problem.

I rechecked all wires and the conections semm OK so if it is not the Carb it may be fuel flow.........can someone tell me how to check it?

To check pump output put the fuel line into a bottle and crank for a few seconds. it should fill it a few inches, might want to check a manual and see just how much it's supposed to put out but half a pop bottle or better in 30 seconds is enough for most stock engines. Now empty the bottle before someone has a sip.

The other cause could be a restricted or sticking needle and seat not refilling the float bowl fast enough. If you are doing the carb you'll be looking at that. check that the float isn't hanging up on something and unable to drop down.

A faulty idle cutoff valve (screws into the left side with the wire terminal on the end) will make it die if you let off the gas pedal but it still runs if you keep the revs up.

Can you borrow another carb and give it a try?

Any one in Maple ridge with a spare carb we can test out?
