New Forged Lowered Spindles Just In!
« on: January 06, 2004, 12:25:07 PM »
We just wanted to let everyone know that we have just recieved our first sets of true forged dropped spindles. These are for ball joint drum brake and are a much needed improvement over other spindles and at a lower price!
Only $309.95 CDN per pair, we will soon have the Forged disc spindles sometime in Feb.
Here is a pic of the new spindles, these drop a full 2 1/2 inches.

Whats the difference between them and CB's other than forged vs Cast - do they still push the tires out 1/2\" per side?
Any other mods?

These are much stronger than many others and forged like the original VW spindles. The new spindles also have two tie rod holes so you can have the stock steering or \"quick steer\" when used for fast turns and also will work on a 3\" narrowed beam without cutting the tie rods.
They do still offset the wheels 1/2 but the strength and price make this a unbeatable combo!

CB Performance has been manufacturing Ductile Iron Drop Spindles for over 8 years. After tens of thousands of spindles sold we can boast a zero failure rate. We do our homework before designing a product like this. Hundreds of hours are spent on product design, testing, and many material choices are discussed. Ductile Iron was chosen as the best material to supply a high quality American made part at a fair price. Many OE American automotive manufactures, such as GM, use ductile iron for spindles. They and we use a spindle spud made from 4340 Chrome-Moly billet steel. This combination is equal in strength to many \"forged steels\". Martensitic grade Ductile Iron has a yield strength typically over 90,000 psi, and a tensile strength over 200,000psi. This combined with the flexibility and \"crack-arresting\" properties of Ductile Iron make it a perfect choice for this application. Just because a product is forged you cannot say it is superior. Many other factors must be considered.

Oh yeah, since when is $309.95 cheaper than $169.95?

We are compairing  the competitions CDN $  to our CDN $ Price  not USD.

According to http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/market/rates.asp , the current exchange rate for CDN is .77646 to 1 USD.  Therefore, our spindles would be $218.88 CND, which is still much cheaper than $309.95, wouldn't you agree??

Once again, we are in Canada and are compairing canadian prices! The exchange is only part of the cost. There is shipping, brokerage, duty on some parts + 2% additional when paying by credit card.
This post is in comparison to our local competitions price.

Please let's not make this out to be any more than it is, CB has great products and we sell many and stand behind them. There is a big difference between USD and CDN prices that some forget to factor in like Shane said. When UPS delivers a package from the USA, UPS will charge all the duties and brokerage at a inflated rate.
When we sell a part to a local Canadian customer we have factored in all these costs so the price we list is the actual cost you pay.
In some cases there are no duties and the price will reflect that.

FTR, i have absolutely no problems with airspeeds prices and cb performance products. i have bought parts at airspeed and will continue to do so. i appreciate the knowledge and assistance that geoff and jim provide, and i'm sure most of the locals like myself truly appreciate a parts store where one can go and see and feel the product that they are about to purchase.

although i have yet to buy a cb performance part, (the time will come soon), they are #1 on my list of parts suppliers. i have only read and heard positive feedback about the quality of their parts. their reputation in the vw community seems to be bar none and they have been at it for quite some time (30 years?), so the must be doing alot of things right.

just my $.02

I totally agree with you guys on this one. I work in cross border trade and talk to someone everyday that forgets all about the the border and the fees when buying or selling goods across the line, then get hit with this extra bill from UPS or whatever courier is moving the goods.

I don't mind if I have to pay a little extra to see a face/product and get some good advice.

Geoff gots such a nice smile

I for 1 could quite easily have all parts shipped to Blaine for my business, then pick them up when I make a trip down, which is 2-4 times a month ( I did this for most of my T4 parts before airspeed was formed).....but what would that do....create less business for 2 guys who are bustin themselves to make something work, and who will at the drop of a dime spend literally hours giving advice or suggestions for whatever questions you have .....I will pay the extra charge to support them unless they feel it's not worth it.

Brokerage kills you in shipping. I know thats why with my business  I bring most things across myself.

MarcusJ, I appreciate the time you've taken to explain your products and their qualities, but from the point of Joe Consumer (me), you've essentially come into another mans's (Geoff's) house and called him out, if not suggesting he's full of s**t. Not cool, and it doesn't give me the sort of feeling that will likely ever make me a CB customer.
Next time, try this:

\"CB Performance spindles compare well to anything on the market, and are competitively priced. See our website for details.\"

Much nicer, don't you think?

amen to that.
Sometimes I get the feeling the whole world is against me, but deep down I know that's not true. Some smaller countries are neutral.

No, that character was Toshiro Takashi (\"hair pie?...thank you!\"), played by Brian Tochi.
Long Duk Dong was from Sixteen Candles, played by Gedde Watanabe.
Both came out in 1984.

j-c-Hamilton, to be fair to Marcusj the original post did have CB's name in it. I removed it at my own will as i had compaired their cast spindles to our new dropped forged spindles.

I didnt mean to offend CB in any way as they do have great products, The price discussion is a whole other thing :)

Air Speed's price is a little more than CB's because these are \"DROPped forged\"  spindles  ;)  (grin)

I'll most likely pickup a set of the disc brake spindles for my Ghia.

MY tWO CENTS

Half the fun of restoring a car or hopping one up is the people you meet along the way.I was in the lower mainland to pick up a newer jetta of my friend rudy who I worked with 19 years ago a guilford vw . I stopped in at Airspeed for the first time ,AWSOME! although I new  Geoff ,s face from years back ,it was great to talk in person and poke around the shop ,some of the other suppliers used to be that welcome ,not anymore.I grabbed a few things and ordered some panels for the bus.I think it,s great to have a place where on a saturday you can shoot the shit , fondle some parts , pick -up some goodies and feel real comfortable. So I guess you can shop how you like , but I'm glad I have a must stop on my visits to the lower mainland.

thanks for the tour Geoff talk to you soon
