C Ya Old Red Dog

Well after a couple of days of my dog looking uncomfortable, I took her into the vet this morning. After exploratory surgery she was found to have cancer all around her liver. Needless to say I am digging a hole tonight in the back 40 and having a glass of scotch and a good old cuban cigar.  :(

Simba was her name. She was a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Bred in South Africa for lion hunting back in the 1800's from what I have read. She was abused as a pup and pulled off a reservation when someone called in about a dog tied up and kids throwing beer bottles at her. She was deathly afraid of anyone (but me) and of course that took a while to develop her trust in me. We spent a couple years together travelling in my VW bus and Corrado.

Sorry I have been too busy as of late old girl. I hope you enjoyed the time as much as I did. Finally resting in peace

Jason,

I just poored myself a single malt and will be firing up one of my montey's for you and Simba tonight. I know the feeling and have nothing but peace to offer you. Oh and don't worry about the time or lack there of that you may have spent with her recently.  I've been around dogs long enough to realise that they have no concept of time and remember only the good times.  ;)    Cheers

Todd

Take care

Hey Jason,

Sorry to hear about Simba.  I thought you might like to read a poem I received after the passing of one of my beloved pets

\"Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

That is cool. Thanks for that.

I think with her that is what I will miss the most. The look that she had for me. It was a bond. One that she had with no one else. She became trusting of my wife and went out to do chores with Shannon's two dogs each morning and evening but it was me that she trusted fully completely. Like I said it took a long time. When I first got her, she wouldn't come within five feet of me. IT took almost a year of going everywhere with me, wrestling, catching frisbee, going for walks and jogs (yes I used to jog daily believe it or not) to make that trust and she was defintely MY dog after that. She was protective of her home but when the guest was introduced \"super chicken\" took over. It was heart breaking to see such a big strong and beautiful dog scared of everyone. How can someone be so cruel to a dog. IT was almost a treat to those that got to pat her. Like catching a unicorn I guess

Dug a hole on her favorite little knoll by the little creek that runs through our back yard. Rhodies like to wander and Sim was no different. This time however I faced her towards home. Had a drink and Romeo and Juliet #2. Love that big red dog. Thanks guys, it was a good vent for me.
