Dead '68 Bug

'68 bug it never ran well, but since we rebuilt the carb (34 pict 3) it does not run.
We can't seem to make it run properly. The rotor does not line up with the notch on the rotor base (1/4 turn out) as a start. Back fires runs for a short time and quits.  We are getting really frustrated, but nothing seems to work. where do we start where do we go Help help HELP

Take all the plugs out and stick your finger in #1 hole (right front corner) and turn the engine (running direction) until you feel compression, turn until it stops and the timing mark on the pulley lines up and whatever wire the rotor is pointing to is now #1. Might be a good idea to check static timing now to see if the points actually open near TDC. Arrange the rest of the plug wires according to firing order and the way the distributor turns an give it a try (plugs back in of course). after that suspect the carb, float level and fuel pump.

The more I think about it youv'e either mixed up the plug wires or have a vaccum leak from a hose off, cap/screw/plug missing or gasket wrong. is the idle solenoid screwed in tight and does it click when you turn on the key?
