Buddy of mine is stranded down in Cali trying to get home for christmas.
Its Jason with the blue 65 bus that he takes everywhere.
Hi everyone. Maureen, and I are traveling through Monterey Ca, and lost all
the gears in our tranny. We have a place to stay with friends, but need a
tranny to get back to Canada for Christmas. We are driving a '65 bus converted to
I.R.S. If some one has a used tranny for sale ready to go into a bus, or a good
reduction box tranny, I would be willing to switch back to the original
setup. If we go this route I could trade the rear disc brake setup (porsche 914
rotors, jetta calipers), or some kind of part trade. The bus is stranded in the
Del Monte Mall, at the Munras exit. I will check the internet from time to
time. I will also leave a couple of phone numbers...cell 1-604-785-6846, friend

Are you sure it's the trans? Loosing all 4 geras is a little weird, did u check all the shifter couplers and joints? What happened, maybe we can find a cure without replacing the trans.

Changing back from irs to swing also means the spring plates and a few other things will need to be changed.

Call us at the shop Thursday and maybe we can help some way.

jason, if you're checking this (or if k-jake could pass it along), give Scott at Volks Cafe in Santa Cruz a call at 831.426.1244. it's a really good parts store, addy is 1823 Soquel Ave in Santa Cruz. I know that's about an hour out of Monterey, but Scott was a BIG, BIG help to me when my fan was about to die. He found me a great shop in Sac to bring the blue angel to, and he might be able to help you out.

Bet he busted a CV joint.  
Tell him to start it up, e-brake on, put it in gear, let the clutch out, then crawl underneath and watch the output flanges.  Gotta check both sides.  One will be turning, the other won't.

Hey guys.
Heres the latest from Jason and what happened.
Thanks for the support!! Maureen, and I really appreciate this. This is what happened...We were camping at a friends acreage just out of Ashland, Or. It snowed about a foot or more while we slept. In the morning we had to back out, but my reverse has been weak since i've owned the bus, it would pop out of reverse under any load, or if the clutch was fully let out and gas given. So, anyways we lost reverse completely by the time we got the bus pointed back down the snowy, slick country road. The tranny has always been kind of clunky when you let off the gas petal while in gear, but in Monterey the noise got worse. I just hoped the tranny would hold in there and stoped at a mall to get some grocries. We got back to the bus, and had no foreward gears. I can start the engine, put the tranny in gear ( I tried 1st and 2nd) and the bus wont move. I can do this with the emergency brake on, and the engine dosen't stall. Under the bus, the passenger side axle ( I.R.S) turnes, but the driver side axle does not. The axle is not broken( as far as i can tell), I can't turn it by hand, is bolted firmly at both ends, and the axle cup seems to be in the tranny, I did try to tap it into the tranny just to see. Maybe I should remove that axle, and take a closer look.
 So its a C.V joint.

Its your right outer CV, by the rear drum that's broken, not the one on the trans.  

You should be able to change it without removing the axle.

Hold onto the accolades for now, Hans could be right.  If the stub axle turns, its the drum.  If the stub does not turn, I win.

When I first owned a vw bug I didnt know that you had to tighten the rear axle nuts to 217 foot pounds, I always tightend them up and backed them off a quarter turn. Because of this my drums always wore throught and my car wouldnt move anywhere. So I'am going to guess that its the drum. :D

Like hans sai, I have had that happen....well i actualy was looking at a car for sale and the guy said the trans was blown. So i pulled both hubcaps, started the engine put it in gear got out and looked at the axle nuts, the drivers was turning ! One new drum later i had a nice driving beetle :D

One could argue that knowledge of this type of failure indicates incompetence.  If you've ever left the nut loose it will happen to you.  
All I can say is that its never happend to me.

Many years ago ,  a friend of a friend of a friend had a nice westy. He looked after it
very well , had a \"repair shop\" do all the service and repairs etc.
This van develop a vibration and noise , after mouths of miner
repair bills trying to fix it the \"shop\" finally said ....it's your transmision!
It's going to cost about $2000.  In steps the friend ....long story short,
loose axle nut fixed under 5min. Transmision lived happly ever after.
Guy never went back to that \"shop\"
  Hey Bruce!!  What ever was found out about Mirco's old trans.
   Moved 1st 2nd shift fork was my guess

Hans, that's similar to what happened to a friend of mine.  He had a Porsche 944 and when he was up in Whistler he noticed the back end was chattering when going around a corner.  All after that it kept doing it at slow speeds.  He took it to the Dealer here in Van, MCL.  They said he had to rebuild his trans.  $4300 was the est.  He took the car away and decided to have his friend look at it.  His friend said lets try something.  He changed the gear oil and dumped in $6 worth of GM LSD additive.  Cured the problem, that was about 7 years ago.

No it wasn't in poco. I believe it was richmound. Not a vw shop, witch says it all.
 Allways take your aircooled vw to a good shop that knows old vw's.
 So ...any word on the bus in Cali.

I've had a tire come off on me when I was younger - double check stuff to make sure. Like matt said shit happens to everyone - noone's perfect.

(but I'm damn close :) )
