Who Does Vw Lock And Keys?
« on: December 26, 2005, 10:11:29 AM »
Of course when I bought the 68 convert, it had no key for the glove box or rear lid. Is there someone who's knowledgable in VW locks locally? There's a guy Mark's VW in the states, but would rather not ship the locks away if I didn't have to. Merry Christmas to all!

You should be able to read the key code off the glove box lock.  It will be stamped on the inside and will be in the format of SC###.  The C could also be a U, or a V.  Get the code and post it.

If your rear lock is an original VW one, your current door/ignition key should plug in.  Confirm this.  If it is a repro lock you can't match it.

Thanks for the reply Bruce,
got a code from the glove box door lock, it's an SU##
I still have to try the rear deck lid again to see if the jkey will fit.
What's next for the glovebox lock key?
thanks again

Bruce,

Do you cut the keys from original blanks? I may need three keys cut for my 58 beetle; ignition, door & engine. Unfortunately, I do not have a complete set.

Thanks

NOS key blanks for your 58 Beetle are SG, and are hideously expensive.  Instead of getting 3 keys cut, I recommend re-keying your ignition and deck lid to match your handle, then get 1 key cut on a repro blank.  Airspeed has SG repro blanks, maybe Geoff will note the cost?

Archer,
What year is your Bus?  55-63s take one blank, 63-66s another, and 67 is unique among the split screen Busses.

Whenever considering re-keying, have a close look at your existing key.  If it is worn down to a nub, it makes no sense to re-key a lock to that and copy it.  Start with a sharp key.

Also check if your key will plug into the lock you want to match.  Even though the lock may appear to be the same, they may take different keys.  An example is late Beetle door handles.  The 68-70 handles take a K key, while the 71 and later take an M key.  Just by looking at them it is impossible to distinguish a 70 handle from a 71 handle.  If you mix them up, you can't match them to the ignition.  Again, if your key is a worn down sliver, it is useless.

I have ignition switches to cover every Bug from 54 to 67, and Bus from 55 to 67.
