Turbo?
« on: October 30, 2005, 10:28:30 AM »
OK guys! I was thinking of putting a turbo on a 1914 that I will build for spring. I know nothing about them. So I was looking at the CB performance website and they seem to use the same turbo as this one. This looks like a decent one and it is cheap! They are around $700 new. Does anybody think this is a good one to buy? If not Why? I just want to build a cheap engine that has a little kick!I don't need all the exhaust and piping.I can make that myself!

That turbo is way to big for a 1914.

It's not about \"turning the boost down\" It's about airflow - that turbo will take ALOT to spool up (create boost) You would be better off with a T3 .42/.48 - or something similar in size. The Hulk runs a T4 with a 2276.

Also personally I am not a fan of the CB system - from what I have seen it has alot of quirky issues to get to run right (ask Cale about his experience, amongst others) I prefer a nice simple draw thru type system = less to go wrong.

I am currently doing a turbo build for my 1914 - you can read about it on my website in the turbo/no2 forum.

Also talk to Turbo Jimmy at airspeed - he is a wealth of knowledge.

The actual turbo on Cales car worked great it was the EFI tuning that was the problem along with keeping the exhaust gaskets from blowing out. I would talk to Cale about the size of turbo he used on his car, you are building a motor similar in size to his. Are you planning on going blow thru or draw thru set up. Carb or EFI? Dont be discouraged its not all that hard and you will enjoy the kick you in the ass power.

I'm running a T-62 on my car - not an aircooled though, but 2.8L of displacement.

There are a few VERY good tech books out there.  check Ebay or chapters.  they should have something about turbo basics.

The turbo mentioned above by james sounds good.  T3's are cheap.  I'd suggest a T3 super 60 turbo.  good for 300-350 WHP and spools up very quickly.  www.kineticmotorsport.com sells a lot of turbos.  I'm sure the guys at airspeed can take care of you.

The CB S2A kit is a great kit if your willing to learn how to tune something that none of your friends have read about, let alone build adjust or tune,

the fact that the Dual throttle bodys look like carbs, and that they use CB dual carb linkage, is about where the similarities end,

its not a draw through carb kit where ya can change jets and read 1000 books on how to set up and run.
nor is it a efi kit where you can plug in a lap top and dial in marker for marker.

think of it more as a coleco vision, turn the knob,LOL,

it works awesome when you get it built and running (mine started first try, but would not shut off)
i would go for it, you will like it, and its basicly 100% ready to rock right outa the box, that and i can help you with anything that you might run into, as i have now spent a fair ammount of time installing and tuning this kit.

and my exhaust leaks were more becuase of my ceramic coating the header flanges.
this kit can haul ass on pump gas, it might not be the best, but it is WAY WAY better than any carb setup,
gets better milage, and starts no matter what. just dont fool yourself by thinking that the box of parts will be a 1 day bolt on. things need to be trimmed and tweaked to work with your motor.

talk with CB, they are honest and tell you the truth.
get a price, my kit could be for sale, altho this post had nothing to do with selling my kit.
:) side draft turbos make for blown motors :)
