Wanted To Rent/trade For/borrow
« on: October 18, 2005, 09:27:37 PM »
i would have posted this in the classifieds, but it's more of a rent/trade for something/borrow type deal.

i'm working on heading to seattle on the weekend to look at a car, and i need some assistance.

1 - does anyone have a tow bar for a beetle that i could rent/trade for something/borrow?

also, i've never flat-towed a beetle. how forgiving are the height restrictions? say stock height nissan pathfinder to tow bar to beetle. will that work?

2 - does anyone have or know of a spot close to the border that i could rent/trade for something/ borrow so i can park the car there for the mandatory 72 hours.

any and all help is appreciated.

if this doesnt go as planned i'll have to resort to plan b.

cheers.

Silas,
I have a towbar that you can borrow and some lights that attach to the license plate frame on a beetle(somewhere not sure though not a sure bet)
Don't care about the towbar just get me some rootbeer or redbull if you real feel necessary. I'm in Vancouver everyday and perhaps we could arrange for me to drop it off somewhere. Its just taking up space and collecting dust.
Pmail me for an arrangement to drop it off...

Silas, get the PO to send you the title (fax/scan) and fax it to US Customs/Border patrol ASAP.

That way you won't have to leave it there.  You can fax it to them even if you decide not to buy it.

Oh yeah, obviously bring an extra tire or two, maybe some bearings etc depending on the condition of the car you're picking up.   Height doesn't matter too much as long as the bug isn't slammed or your truck isn't jacked up.  (And it won't work on a narrowed beam!)

You can park it at Yorkys gas station 2 blocks before the truck crossing.

You can park it at my office. Right on the truck border behind the US Duty Free Stores.

No cost and someone is here 24/7 so nobody will mess with it.

Your height will be close but should be still good. Don't forget ball size most tow bars made for a beetle are 2\" or 1 7/8\"

hey everyone, thanks for the responses.

kirin and james - thank you both very much for the offers to use the towbars. i will pm both of you shortly and let you know whats up.

hoosier daddy (shane) - thank you for the offer. that sounds like it will work perfectly. i will pm you.

lanny - thanks for the heads up on yorky's gas station. i will keep that as a back up plan.

ehos - the border requires the title and the bill of sale and allthough getting the title shouldnt be a problem, i have yet to see the car and commit to buying it so a bill of sale is missing.

shane - thanks for being you.

satans square - thanks for the heads up. i have talked with the owners of the towbars and will make sure that the ball & hitch match.

now,

as per another thread, towing an uninsured vehicle is illegal, correct? so a permit will be needed, or i can risk it and tow without. am i right?

thanks again y'all.

still working on some things but the ball is definately rolling now.

Silas,

I did the exact same thing with the '62. Depending on your tow hitch height on the Pathfinder you may want to look at a slide in assembly that has a bit of a drop in it, I have one if you want to borrow it. I think it would only be required if the bettle is lowered. Oh yeah, make sure the lug nuts are tight and bring a spare for sure!

Correct, I personally would buy a one day BC permit for my other beetle and stick that in the window  :D
But I would never reccomend someone else do that  ;)

Good luck

i'll check the hitch height on the tow vehicle tomorrow.

the beetle is stock height.

i'll figure out permits for the towed beetle or go without.

mike, thanks for the offer on the hitch. i may take you up on that. i'll let you know.

thanks again to everyone who has responded and who is offering to help out. i really appreciate it.

cheers.

It's been a few years since I bought a WA state temp operating permit.  Back then you used to buy a blank permit for $10, good for one day.  Then you had to fill it out in ink and post it in your window.  Way easier than our system.  I've bought them at the Exxon on the road leading to the truck crossing south of H street, and at any WA DOT weigh scale.

Silas, the US border doesn't need a bill of sale to clear the car (you can check the export rules on their website).

The Canadian side needs the bill of sale, title etc :)

the web site says you must provide documents that demonstrate proof of ownership. In almost all cases that's the certificate of title. The ownership documents and two copies must be presented to us customs.
Just in the middle of going through this!

Yup, the 'title' is more than enough for US customs.

Otherwise it would be a real mess if you had to fax them the title AND a bill of sale (trust me, it would be a nightmare for commerical importers).
