1966 Westfalia Camper Bus
« on: August 09, 2005, 06:18:09 PM »
The bus is a resto project. the mechanicals have been done, it has a fresh motor/tranny in it 1600dp.  it has the ussual rust. but with a battery it could be driven.

the car is 99 percent complete, its missing the rear bumper and hatch glass. other then that the whole original interior and most everything is there. it has an uncut dash.

$3500

Where is it located? Got any pics? I may know some one who might be interested. What exactly is "the usual" rust - rockers? doglegs? floors? window frames?

dog legs are solid as a rock, the window frames are fine, the gutters are fine. i mean like lower body rust, not bad at all. the lower nose is fine, and most of the drivers side.

mostly just the right rear corner, and the bottoms of the cargo doors. the floor isnt to bad, no Gaping holes, but i have not had the chance to inspect it properly.

i will take proper photos and post tomarrow.

God I want this bus bad...
Quick somebody loan me the money to buy it..
In all honesty I have seen it in person and with some rust repair and slammage it would be an awesome rat camper or a great project.
Very quite a solid bus.

not that it really matters but the bus looks like a '67 to me

one year only radio cut out, 67

one year only gas flap (no key hole), 67

rear hatch has finger grip on lock, 67  (66 would have a round pushbutton and hand indent in body)

it's a 67 (early; no reverse lights)..........final answer.

agreed.

of course, the vin # would prove the year. seems like the obvious place to look.

I believe reverse lights were from August 67 on (only on late 67's (i.e. it's possible to have a 67 without reverse lights)). VIN would solve any dispute. I am not trying to be contentious, just thought I'd point that out..I'm a bus guy  :)

heres the VIN

21700690  so it sounds like a very very late 66.   july 66 production.

The bus is 12Volt, it has a 12Volt sticker in the in the door jam, between the nose/door.  now being such a late 66, is it possible that it was originally 12v ?

1967 Chassis started at # 217 000 001

after '65 the 3rd digit in the VIN is the 2nd digit of the "model year"  not the production.

What you have there is a very early '67 (born in july '66)

Keep it, and ride bus style, you'll love it

if it is a 67 model that was made in 66, wouldnt it have been made on or after august 1st, 1966?

is the vin # that jackie posted missing a #, or is it just me?

took the number right from the paper work, according to the samba the bus was made in july 66 making it a 66.

hmmmm.

anyways, i would love to keep the bus, but i bought my beetle 3 years ago and its still sitting there, followed by my 1981 scirocco restoration project so this would be 3rd in line and i know i would never get around to doing anything with it.

so lets find a good home for it.

EDIT : one number may be missing, this is what was scribbled on the paper work, im storing the bus in POCO, so i cant go and look at the number right now. but either way if there was a number missing on the end it wouldnt change anything. i think july 66 sounds accurate.

this bus is great because it has NEVER been messed with, abused, or modified.   what you see is what you get, no surprizes.

you know more about busses than i do. going off of the Samba its built in july, and july would be a 66 According to thesamba. also it says 66 in my papers. so i think its a late 66.

either way, the bus was not cleaned up for photos, if i took some soap and water to it, the bus would be presentable.

no.

as busnerd pointed out, on buses made on and after august 1st '64 (the start of the '65 model) the 3rd # in the vin indicates the model year.

217 = 1967

also, if a # was missing off the end, the vin # would be 217 006 90x, which would mean that your bus was built in august of '66. making it a '67 model.

and, if you are refferencing this...

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/c...assisdating.php

remember that the vin # indicated is the vin # of the last bus made in that month.

216 198 668 = the last bus made in july of '66.

217 020 467 = the last bus made in august of '66.
