Pomona 5400 Km Part 2
« on: October 23, 2003, 11:32:06 AM »
So we left Pomona fair grounds around 1;40pm and headed north to Sacramento on the I5. We planned to be in Sacramento late that night but didn't count on a little de tour John was about to take us on.

It was 7 hours or so into the drive when John started to drive, Matt was fast asleep in the back and i was starting to doze off. I asked John if he was Ok to drive \"Oh yeah no problem\" Sacramento was now only 68miles away roughly 1hr and long enough for me to get some sleep.
I wake up more than a hour later as we pull into the city, strange enough it dosen't look much like Sacramento? Matt says\"I dont remember there being any light rail (commuter trains) running down the I-5? ???????????? John are you sure this is Sacramento?

Oh yeah i just followed the signs. What do you mean followed the signs all ya gotta do is stay on the 5 and you go thru Sacramento.

As i look up i see a sign for Sac \" Sacramento 65 miles\" What the fu#K? John where are we?

John says..........Ummmmm i have no idea?

Well after 30min of driving in circles we found out John took a exit somewhere and drove to Oakland.......Thats near Sanfrancisco!
We kicked John out of the drivers seat and headed east to Sacramento ....still a hour away!

We decided to spend the night in Sac so i could cut out a large section of a panel van for my project. 8am Monday with Sawzall in hand i start cutting, with Matt and Johns help 3.5 hrs later, 80' weather,5 blades and countless charging of the batteries we have a 1/4 section.

The van we cut it from like all the others there are 100% rust free and should not be wrecked! The yard is very well run and has washrooms, tool rentals, food and drinks and very clean!
Here is a shot of the section we cut out. we later moved the door to the bed of the truck and the 1/4 was tied down using all the straps........more on this later :o
As we finish we hear a loud screaming noise....look up and what do we see? A Galaxy coming in for a landing! (largest US Army transport plane)

With the trailor loaded and a stop for gas and food we were off!
Back on the i-5 we headed north with hopes of stopping at a few yards that are filled with VW's. Matt needed a t3 armrest and was detirmined to find one.
Here are a few shots of one yard, all the cars are for sale.

We stopped at a few other places and looked around, lots of great rust free projects are still out there.

Some where in California we stoped for dinner at Red Robin, as we pulled off the exit we saw that someone went straight off the off ramp and rolled onto their roof, this was the third or so accident we saw.

Every gas station we stopped at we checked the straps on the 1/4 pannel. They were always tight and in good shape.
It started to pour with rain in Fife so much you could hardly see ahead of you.
We arrived at the Sumas border at 4am, the guard asked what we had bought and i told him of all the parts including the 1/4 on the trailor. He says i dont see anything back there? i say it's laying flat , kinda hard to see.
Guard, No there is nothing there... what the?
I get out and sure enough the 1/4 is missing!
So...... i drop john off turn around with Matt and drive all the way back to Seattle to try and find it. More so no one hits it and gets hurt. We looked everywhere but could not see it.

If ya happen to find a white 1/4 pannel from a 69 bus somewhere on the i-5 let me know :(

More pics to be added.
