Car Wont Start
« on: March 28, 2005, 10:29:18 AM »
So i was ripping on the freeway when an apparent wining noise started.
It would get progressively louder with increase in RPM's.

The motor still felt strong so i figured it was probably a belt or perhaps the alternator protesting.

Anyhow, i park the car and it won't start at all, i try jumping the car but nothing... no even a click from the starter. My alternator/generator light would stay on for about 15-20 secs after driving but would go away...

Perhaps starter? distributor? What else could it be?

Car is a 65, 1914, alternator, 12v, points,

TIA

Will it turn over by hand? try that first.

if it turns by hand make sure both dash lights come on when you turn the key on the first notch
then check to see if you are getting spark, then gas or vice versa

i have had the problem once before when the power wire going to the starter(or the alternater, not sure) came loose in the connection housing. when this happened to me i just lifted the back seat up , and reconnected it, i was behind the driver seat. but i never had the whining noise, so i am not sure if it will be te same problem.

Yes, it turns by hand.
Both lights red/green are on 1st notch.

reefreshd_jive: where's this connection housing youre talking about? in the engine bay or by the battery (under the rear bench)?

It sucks trying to troubleshoot this thing in my underground parking lot  :(

If you ever think you have a problem with your belt or your charging light comes on in your dash while driving .........STOP NOW!!!   If the belt really is off ,you will quickly over heat your motor.

Check if you are getting power to the small termenal on the starter while trying to start.

I had a problem like this in my '74 beetle.  I started it up and there was a whining noise that I hadn't heard before.  It sounded to me like the alternator bearings, so I drove on.  I shut the car off and it wouldn't start ever, no click, nothing.  Turns out the starter pinion didn't retract after last starting.  The starter was shot, the pinion gear was blue it had gotten so hot.

I say pull the starter and take a look.
