Hey, i'm a newb with a few questions

What are case savers?

What's a good compression ratio to be running for a street car?

and what size carbs would be ideal to run on my engine....its one of airspeeds stroker shortblocks 74x85.5 but getting bored to 94mm.....i got a short memory and can't remember the name of the heads but there the one at airspeed one the top shelf ported by darren :wacko:

I believe case savers are the threaded inserts for running 10mm studs instead of 12mm studs for heads, I think I am getting this right, compression tough call, I have not yet decided on what to run in my 1914, and carbs, well I picked up a set of dellorto 48's that I will run, obviously tuned down a bit, hope that helps a little. You are getting the 40 x 35.5 outlaws heads?

if thats what there called than yes...would 40's be too small? i dont want a set of carbs that will work but are on the small side and restricting my engine...

Sorry Dub , a little slow sometimes. Your case probably already has the insterts(case savers) for your head studs in it . They came stock in cases after .....I think about 73 and in mexican and brasilian cases. Before that it was just studs threaded right into the case.
As far as compression and carbs etc. , we need to know more about what you want to do with this car and your budget. Mild street? street/strip? race only? Or as they say.......cheep , fast , reliable, .....pick any two.

well with carbs, in most cases you can tune them down to accomadate your engine, of course I am no expert, this is just what I have learned in the last few months.

before anyone can comment on compression /carbs and even camshaft, some basic info is needed
what type of crank/head valve size/max valve lift/trans gearing/car weight/main vehicle usage/octain fuel expected to use/does it need to go to aircare/maintanence factor/how long between teardowns/cam???
hopefully you can see it all needs to come together in some sort of plan/order.if you just toss parts at it you may not be happy in the end,fill us in.

ok, this is what i have right now, airspeeds 1700cc short block , all i know is its got a 74mm stroke, 110 cam, and is goign to be bored to 94mm, the carbs most likely weber 48 ida's, heads - 044 super mag cnc round port 44x37, the trans has yet to be built so i dont know what ill do for gearing yet, octane doesnt matter 94? if the motor needs to be torndown once a year thats fine,while the motor is out i can put in my stock one and go thru aircare.

So far from what i have and what i want what should be changed or done differant? Heads? bigger cam?

Well , I'm running a 74x90.5(1904cc) with a engle K 8 cam , 1.4 rockers, VW 040 heads modified with 40x35.5 valves and my own backyard porting and seat cutting , 8.7 : 1 compresion , IDA's with 37 vents , 1 5/8 header with old school dual mufflers, 009 dist. with points and blue coil. In a stock weight 68 beetle it ran a best of 14.75 at 89 mph . So not so fast but I absolutely love the way it runs on the street , my wife even likes driving it. It easily passes air care. It has seen about 4000 street miles over two summers inclueding many 7000 rpm bursts. Two things I really want to change are , get some real heads and bump the compression up to about 9.5:1. This may allow me to dip into the 13's ......I hope. Hope this helps give ya some ideas.

larger ratio rockers will open up the valves more. I'd suggest you run dual or triple valve springs to aviod valve/piston slap, or valve float

IDA's are 48mm .... IDF's come in 40, 44 , and 48mm
IDA's have enjoyed a cult like status since the begining of time.(almost)
IDF's are pretty nice too .
