If you could build your dream garage what would you build? Any cool garage mods out there?

Have you checked out Sear's new line ( to canada anyways) of stainless steel or titanium painted cabinets. Spendy but they do have bling. They have a nice portable roller drawer cabinet for only $499. I'd get one but its to bulky compared to my snap on portable cart but its very functional for a home garage.

Home Depot has powder coated storaged shelves that are nice for your VW inventory.

As for hoists I'd want a permanent one unlike the portables ones that roll around. Portables are still to tall to roll under our beetles.

My home garage sucks!! 20x20 filled with crap!! as long as I can pull my engine and trans out with basic tools I'm happy. I wouldn't call my shop/workplace a dream shop but with 24/7 access its only 15 minutes away. Before you'd catch me there 3 AM tinkering on my Vdub.... not anymore. Sleep is more valuable now!!!

My dream garage would be large enough to store most of my cars in door during the winter months, and have enough room to have a couple projects on the go. Every tool necc. to do 100% of the mechanical, and a good selection of body work tools (even though I hate bodywork, and my bro owns his own bodyshop). Lathe, mill, welder and all the good fab tools to make near anything imaginable (even though my dad has all this in his shop) I guess I just need to ship my family off, and take their shops! :lol:

I swear though my next garage is gonna have a hoist! I hate using creepers [_[

this is my dream garage with the 911, but other cars would replace the Benz and the SUV. There would also have to be a full fabrication shop in it in the far bay. the center one would have a hoist, and then a double car parker as pictured.

Tell me about it. Hoist or bust ^_^ Actually for our beetles a set of floor jacks works ok. But having hoists is a luxury for a home garage.

As for the powder coated shelves. I think Costco has those from time to time too. Man I gotta clean my sh!! hole garage. My \"new\" family is a bunch of friggen packrats. Remeber that crap you saw trev!!! At one time I was able to park 2 vehicles. Now I have a lot of room just for my beetle.

So any trips to Vancouver?

My garage is slowly starting to turn into yours Alan. I have a few too many parts boxes being stacking up in the corners, and they are creeping their way towards the centre!

Hope to come out to the coast again this year...however I'm not sure if it will be work related or to attend the show again (might go to Seattle this year instead)

i'm just happy to have a dry garage to work on my car, but if i had the coin to build a dream garage it would have to include the following...

110/220 volt wiring, big ass compressor, blasting cabinet, parts washer, drill press, hydraulic press, mig & tig welder, english wheel, brake & roll shear for cutting metal, 2 post hoist w/ 4 arms (screw the 4 post drive on lift), all the pneumatic tools i could ask for, all specialty vw tools, stainless cabinets...and a seperate area for painting would be nice too.

here is a cool type 2 & type 3, and ghia friendly garage. and the bikes add a nice touch.

and another filled with an aray of sweet goodness. split cab, og split, cal-look split, type 34, riviera, notch, couple of chevs, mmmmmmm...and a shopping cart.

I got a TV, phone and computer set up in mine, need a bigger compressor but I got the bench and lots of shelving, and I can fit two cars in there and work on them as well. I want to get some sort of rubber coating for the floor and insulate the door, other wise I am satisfied

sorry, i forgot you couldnt tell the difference between the two. i guess it's hard when you own a car that you never work on yourself, and your house has a 2 car \"storage building\" attached to the side of it.

storage or work, it looks like the pics of the \"garages\" i posted can double as both. you did notice the tool boxes and work benches. sure storage is great, but the availability of room in either of those two spots could easily be used for maintenance, repair and restoration.

Unlike you who pretends to work on a car that is in a millions pieces and you just say you are restoring it...
I guess when I am in arizona I could pick up a piece of shit like yours and put it in my 2car garage that has tools and say I am restoring it for the next 5 years like you.

your bushy eyebrows must be covering your eyes and messing with your vision. roll the awnings back and look at the first and last pic i posted. workbenches & tools. and i agreed that those 2 spaces seem to be used more for vehicle storage, but they are garages.

i'm proud of you for learning how to change a tire and check your own oil, but how many times do i have to tell you that your acvw doesnt require coolant.

i thought you allready were picking up a peice of shit in arizona. why would you want to pick up 2?

I wouldn't go radiant heat burn the paint off your roof or melt your westy roof. I heard someone burnt there paint off there roof. Mind you it was a full sized van but a westy might have the same problem. I like my ceiling mounted heater just fine. In this part of the country you need a heater.

Are we talking radiant heat from an overhead natural gas heater like in warehouses, or radiant heat from pipes in the floor. The ceiling type could warm up surfaces very warm if installed too close to an object, but burning paint would have to be less than 1 foot away I would think. Definitly no where near the heat from an infloor water heating system though.

A cheap infloor heating system is to plumb your hot water tank into the infloor piping. It's only that your water tank is a replacable item which would have to be replaced more often, which is way cheaper than a boiler system by thousands.

Anyway I was talking about the radiant heaters mounted on the ceiling not the floor type. Obviously the floor type with water wouldn't do any harm. Anyway I am done with this subject. I know pointless. Anyway I was always fond of a U-shape garage. Where you would drive in the open end and you would have 3 garge doors down each side and 3 on the far end. With a nice courtyard in the middle for washing and such. You could gate the end so the doors were unaccessable to thieves and you push your button and the doors open to get in then press the garage door opener for the door for that particular car. I had seen one but can't find a pic to show you guys.
