Go with whichever one provides you the bst price, the services are essentially the same, speed is relative to your location in both cases, I have bench tested both products side by side and they both suffer from the same flaws regarding \"too many people sharing a connection\"

Just use one against the other and get whatever you can, both companies will do whatever they can to get you to stay online.

Shaw will, in most cases, install service in 24 hours, Telus takes about 7 days.

Yup, what 76'r says.

I am definately not a COMPUTER GURU (GEEK)  :P

But talking to friends and family, each service seems to react differently in different parts of the lower mainland.  Four neighbors  near me have changed or are SHAW customers.(Comolake, Coq)  My brother-in-law and his neighbours have changed over to Telus. (Kerrisdale. Vanc)

Talk to your neighbors, find the best posssible deal...

Have fun

Telus ADSL is technically superior, because you establish a direct and unique connection between your computer's modem, or router, if you will.  Your system has a direct line to a modem node on thier server.  This allows the provider to add all kinds of protection schemes to each of thier subscribers on an individual basis.  Also, the download bandwidth is 1.5 Mb for the standard service.

Cons:

-Can be difficult to setup if you have multiple users on a home network that need access.
-If you are more than 1.1 kms away from the nearest node, you are out of luck - no service available.
-your network card MAC adress is registered with the Telus (or spoofed through your router) in order to get access.  Change computers, network cards, or wanna get access with your laptop?  Have fun setting that up.

Cable internet works differently.  The cable provider allows a block of users access through a network node.  This means that you may have up to 25 subscribers sharing your node.  Technically, this means a less secure connection (because you are on a network with a bunch of computers sending and receiving data packets through a common access node).  However, cable is generally faster, especially during off peak times.  The throughput speed you see is dependant on how manny people are running data (accessing the internet) on your node.  Download speeds of 2.5 to 5.2 Mb are not uncommon.

Cons:

- potentially less secure
- everyone surfing after dinner time make your internet connection slower

OK, so here's my $.02

My business partner has had Telus ADSL service in North Van for 3 years now.  He has had to endure several outages, some that have lasted 2 or more days.  He gets about 10 times more e-mail spam than I do on my Delta Cable e-mail account.  I set his home network up, as well as another friends network.  Total pain in the butt.  In both cases, I had to get a Telus representative on the line to physically connect to the network router in order to get internet access.  We could not have done it from our access points, with or without thier software.  Everyone tells me this has changed, but if you are a neophyte, be prepared to call Telus for help.  Both of my close friends have had plenty of complaints about Telus.

My sister has Shaw high speed in Coquitlam.  Because she has an internet business, and has a static IP address, we set up a Cisco Router/hardware firewall in her home.  Setup was a total piece of cake, everything worked wonderful first time out, and she has had no problems whatsoever.

I am fortunate to be on DCCNET, which (a closely guarded secret, up until now) is the second fastest cable internet service in North America.

Download speeds are usually on the order of 4.7 to 5.2 Mb during off-peak periods, and around 2.2 to 2.7 Mb during peak times.  I run a wireless network at home, and even the wireless computers have fast downloads.

In order to get the same speeds with Telus, I would have to get thier High speed server service, at 154.95/mo :P

Get cable, put in all the protection, and surf away.

Just a reply, my opinion of course.....

Telus ADSL

Cons:

-Can be difficult to setup if you have multiple users on a home network that need access.

The difficulty level is the same for both DSL and CABLE, same type of connection either way.

-If you are more than 1.1 kms away from the nearest node, you are out of luck - no service available.

Service is available up to 3 km's away in roughly 90% of Telus service areas. Just call and they will tell you.

-your network card MAC adress is registered with the Telus (or spoofed through your router) in order to get access.  Change computers, network cards, or wanna get access with your laptop?  Have fun setting that up.

Buy a router, setup the router MAC address and your done, anyone can come over with there laptop or what have you, and hook up at my house, just plug in and go.

Both ADSL and CABLE share bandwidth. ADSL service speed is only guaranteed between you and your network port. CABLE has no guaranteed speed, it is more susceptible to network slow downs due to the type connection between your cable modem and the providers router.

CABLE is going to be faster overall due to a simple fact, coaxial cable has a higher bandwidth potential than copper pair. To give you an example, cable tv can provide upwards of 90 analog television channels(and still have room for internet services and 500+ digital channels) while that same copper pair that provides you ADSL and dial tone for your phone can only provide 15 or so analog TV channels.

CABLE in a perfect world would be the best choice, with there new motorola modems you can, in theory, achieve speeds over 40 meg per second. But that wont happen until such time as we are provided with fiber optic service to the curb. ADSL has better traffic control, they can regulate speed more effectively than CABLE and thus provide a more stable product, speed wise.

The main thing to remember is that \"your only as fast as the slowest connection\" so if the file your looking to download is on a server with a 640kb/sec upload speed the most you will ever get is 640kb/sec but that is only if your computer is directly connected to that network.

Ultimately my initial comment still stands, look for the best deal, buy a router, and dont sign up for stuff online with your email personal email account, get a hotmail address, use it to sign up for mailing lists. Seeing as most spam originates in there email service let it stay there! Make use of the services provided by the internet providers, use there 24hr TECH SUPPORT, its free, they can help with almost anything. Get a good antivirus program, that is number 1, buy a router, there cheap and work very well when setup properly and are quite easy to setup. dont go wireless unless you absolutely have to, most people dont know how to setup wireless or dont use any security on it and that makes for free internet for your neighbours and opens your computer up.

ADSL modem from telus free to rent while you must buy the shaw modem. There are enough freaken connection fees and charges when you set these stupid things up, and that's why i went with ADSL. for the average home user...there really isn't tha tmuch of a difference.

Shaw gives you a modem to use, but you save $5 a month if you buy it.
