Anybody know how hard it is to import a vehicle that was never imported originally? What kind of inspections, if any, are different than importing a beetle?

What do you mean by Never imported originally? You mean someone brought it into Canada without importing it and exporting it from its country of origin?

OK, I have always wanted a VW Brasilia, they are kind of a cross between a type 4 and a type 3, yet use a type 1 upright motor, made in Brazil, never imported to North America. There are only 2 in existance in the US. I don't have one in mind, just wondering if it is even possible. They look like this

Some info for you.......

VEHICLES PURCHASED FROM THE UNITED STATES

VEHICLES PURCHASED OUTSIDE CANADA AND THE UNIED STATES

The Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Regulations require that all vehicles imported into Canada comply, at the time of importation, with the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in effect on the date the vehicle was manufactured. Vehicles manufactured for sale in countries other than Canada and the United States do not comply with the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act, CANNOT be altered to comply and CANNOT be imported into Canada. The only exceptions to this rule are vehicles fifteen (15) years old or older as determined by the month and year in which the vehicle was manufactured and buses manufactured before January 1, 1971.

Vehicles acquired in foreign countries other than the U.S. and designed, built, tested and certified to meet either all applicable Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or all applicable United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and bearing a statement of compliance label affixed by the original manufacturer, as required by the Regulations, may be eligible for importation into Canada provided the vehicle has not been altered and the certification from the original manufacturer is maintained. Please contact Transport Canada, Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation Directorate, at 1-613-998-8616 for further information

So if I'm reading that right, if the car is 15 years old or more, it doesn't have to comply with the safety standards it would have had to when it was new, right? so i shouldn't have an issue importing one here?

Registering a used vehicle from a country other than the USA

In order to register the vehicle, the following is required:

The vehicle registration document and Certificate of Title
A Vehicle Import Form (Form 1) from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)
A Casual Goods Accounting Document (B15) from the CBSA
A \"passed\" Vehicle Inspection Report from a Designated Inspection Facility in BC; check the Commerical Vehicle Safety and Enforcement website
If the vehicle is not registered and titled in your name, a signed and dated bill of sale is also required. However, a Certificate of Title signed by the registered owner of the vehicle and naming you as the new owner, is acceptable instead of a bill of sale.

Back in High school my friend had one, a red Brazilia, lowered. Great car! I tried to buy it after it had changed hands a few times. I think it's still in North Van somewhere.

They are very cool, sounds like we need a road trip to Mexico! There are lots of them there.

I did a google search, it's funny how 99% of the websites are not in my native tongue....what the hell? Apparantly oldbug.com had one for sale a while back, and sold it to sopme mid-america collector.

Anyone know of the one in N. Van that Geoff is talkin about?

Matt, you'll have no trouble with it at all. Just get a VI for the out of province bit, and drive it. You'll even get a 1 year exemption from Air Care!

I'm in the midst of getting a right hand drive 81 BMW 323i on the road. The 323i is a 6 cylinder, 4 wheel disc braked version on of our watered down 320i that was sold here. 323i was never sold in North America, and certainly not in right hand drive! My guy tells me paperwork will be a snap.

I imported my bug from the states, it wasn't any big deal, hardest part was getting it fixed up for inspection, but that was my own fault for buying a rusty bug

Brian, you silly tit, my concern was not with importing a car, only importing a model never offered in north America. I didn't know if there would be different rules for that or not.

went to ebay brazil there was a few brasilia's on there they would work out to be about 3000 dollars canadian looks like a pretty sweet car though one of a kind

As you know I've sold my soul to the devil or rather to a BMW lol. Actually I didn't see the \"Project badass 'bert\" In a upcoming thread. At any rate. I'm trying to figure out the process of bringing back a Vehicle that was originally sold in Canada. Do I need a provincial safety inspection even though its registered currently in Illinois and previously Ontario?
Sounds like I'm doing a roadtrip when I'm back in June..

once it has been registered in another province it will require an inspection.
