'just wondering what the normal operating tempature of a vw beetle motor should be?

i have a 1914cc, and the temp gauge will go to 170degrees, is that to much, or normal?

That is not very hot at all. My 1835 runs at 180 on the highway, and will hit 200 in traffic on a 25-30 degree day. All stock doghouse tin with a 1.5 quart sump (temp sender in sump).
