Just Got Back Into Vws
« on: October 19, 2004, 10:35:32 PM »
Hey Guys, I just got back into VWs.   I use to build alot of them 10 years ago.   I'm finding out alot has changed.    I picked up an oval window that needs alot of work.  I always wanted one before and finally got one.   I also picked up a IRS pan.       It would be cool if you guys could lead me the right way into restoring this car.  I want to use as many new parts as possible.   I like a car that handles well and performs well.    Whats the best front end to get.   Any mods I should know about when mounting to the IRS pan.   I want to put big power in it.  Is there any chassis bracing I should do.

Thanks for any help

Dave

First welcome, second how deep are your pockets :)  I'd recommend really planning out a project before jumping in head first, it will save you time, money and headaches.

What do you want to do with the car? Cruise on the freeway, eat ricers at the track, be able to loose any car in an S curve?

There is a huge wealth of knowledge on this forum (and alot of friendly \"debates\")

I'd like to  hit the track to see what it has. But  I'll probably just cruise with it, but I like alot of HP.    I have a Ford F150 Harley davidson with over 400 Hp in it.     Planing out the car is exactly what I'd like to do.     Mostly good handle in the corners and lots of HP.   I'm going to start the mock up on the car this week.   Striping it down.  seeing what parts I need.   I need new floor pans.   I'll need the front end soon too get the body mounted.    I'm thinking 5 spoke empis.   4 wheel disk brakes.    I'll be doing most of the restoration myself, Body work , welding.    The motor and trans I'll get build.   I was thinking about a turbo but decided against it,just for looks   I want to keep a rear deck lid on it.

I thought the turbo stuck out to far.   If not maybe. Maybe I'll have to re think going with a turbo.   Is there any heat problem when running a turbo.   I've restored a few car over the years.  My last project was a 1928 model A.   Those are alot of work.   You have to design the car as you go.   My wife wanted my to build another bug.   She like the first one I did.

I hoping to have the car finished for summer of 2006.

Welcome,

CB performance offers a hideaway turbo kit with FI as well. IT will also fit under the deck lid.

I picked up new floor pan today.   Talk to Dan at the store,  I got alot of info on where to go from here.   Still undecided on a turbo motor or not.    Is going with a narrowed front end the better way to go.  I worried about tire clearence.  I want to lower the car alot.      How much HP different is there between dual carbs and a turbo motor  If I was to go big with both.

I really appreciate the help guys.  This'll make thing alot easier for me.

you could make a super high strung carbed motor that makes 200+ hp or you could build a milder turbo motor that makes 200+ and still be semi reliable
id go turbo myself

Alan runs his 11 second carbed car daily, it's around 200hp. I narrowed front end will get your tires under the fenders nice but I think it also increases your turning radius.

welcome to the asf and the wonderfull world of vw's, dave. glad to have you aboard.

where are you located, exactly? and by the look of you user name, you've snagged yourself an oval. verrry nice.

lots of good advice here. so i'll throw in my $.02

you're off to a good start. shop at airspeed parts. support the guys that support our hobby. if they dont have what you need, i'm sure they'll be able to find it for you.

the front end depends on the wheels you run and the tuck & slam that you want. i'd suggest a cb performance 2-3\" narrowed adjustable beam w/ drop spindles for discs and some disc brakes up front. empi's w/ 145's should tuck nicely. get an airspeed 2-3\" narrowed sway bar to contain the body roll in the corners. i'm pretty sure airspeed has a traction bar aswell.

engine wise is up to you, of course, and i'm still learning but i know that a 2L vw can be streetable, with turbo or n/a. pick your poison. pointblank had a decklid, but it had standoffs at the top. if you want it completely shut, them i'm sure you can shoe horn it in there. depends on your application, really. street, strip, weekend warrior, all of the above? and how much $$ you want to throw at it. you can go to http://www.cal-look.com and check out the top 20/10 n/a and turbo/nitrous rankings and check out some of the motor combos some people have and the times they're running to get a feel for it.

what look/style are you going for? if you got some pics, post 'em up. there is also a customers projects forum where you can start your very own thread about your build. (mine is in there collecting dust and cobwebs as i type. B) )

most importantly, have fun and build your ride the way you want it.

cheers.

Hey Silas...I'm in Abbotsford.   I'm going with wide 5 empis.   and that front end you mentioned.     The deck lid stand off doesn't bother me.      Probably going to go with a carbed motor.   I like the clean look of it.

OK please take what James has to say with a grain of salt, he is mentally challenged when it comes to VW's, we all feel sorry for him and let him post.  ;)  He thought it would be cool to build a 1914cc  He is our special Board member,,, just talk in Pig latin and he will be confused.

welcome,if you have the pan of another car your in great shape.start with that first.motor is a long ways away
what you really need to do is be 100% honest with youself and sit down and note everthing want, from the car . performance/reliabilityfactor/maintance/costs/look/time/sublets/etc etc, once you have some guidlines start putting some dollar values next to each area ,pretty soon you will have a plan and a budget.its real easy to get ahead of yourself and over budget, stick to one thing and finnish it before moving on.it all needs to get done in the end anyway.if you need some idea when doing a pan off take a look at my car in the members section ,i know its long but there is alot of pictures and ideas that may help you decide on things.
good luck on the project

Cool Pics,    Gives me a good idea on where to start.    I picked up new floor pan today.  I'm going to pick up the front end tommorow.  I have to figure out what disk break I want to run.   And I also going to pick up Mags and tires.   I don't want any surprises later on clearences.

Don't worry about that post in regards to my engine, I have a 1914 in a 66 beetle that has a best time of 13.5 @ 95mph - which is good enough to beat alot of cars on the street. Shane is just jealous that mine lasted the season and was able to cruise around town on 94 octane gas.

Alan has a website that has his combo/build on it http://members.shaw.ca/acvw/index.htm

There are a couple video's on my website http://members.shaw.ca/jamcind

Talk to the guys at airspeed, if you go with a 2\" narrowed beam you can still run your stock tie-rods without cutting them, you just have to turn them in.

I picked up a IRS pan from a 72 bug.   I'm going ot go with the 2\" norrowed front beam... I was thinking about running 4 wheel dick brake and I also want to run wide 5 empis.    Will all this work together.  Would it be better to go with the 4 bolt pattern and pick a different wheel.

You can get a wide five disk brake kit that will allow you to run the wide 5 Empis. In my opinion early cars look much better with the traditional wide 5 pattern, but that is just me. I have the front disk brake kit and it works awesome, (will probably go with the rear this winter). It all boils down to what you want, anything can be done with enough $$ :D

It hasn't been a good day.  I've been striping everything off the body the last few days, and it's not good.   The bottom of the door post have been patch with metal and rivots.   there is rust holes that have been patched over and paint so you couldn't see them on the inside.   basically  I don't think I'm going to do this car.  I think it's to far gone.   I do need to find a good oval window now.     If anyone know of any,  jsut body perfered because I want to switch over to IRS,  But I'll look at anything.

Thanks

That's unfortunate to hear, but don't be too afraid of rust. You can buy almost every panel to repair a rusty bug. You won't find anything local, for a decent price, that isn't rusty. if you are dead set against fixing rust you may have to look down south for a decent body for a fair price.

The rust isn't really a problem.  Cutting out panel and welding in new ones I can do.   I'm not sure I want to replace everything.   But I'm going down to airspeed, tommorow and checking on the peices.   We'll see what I can get.

Silas.  I'm missing the whole front clip on the car I already have.  What else do you need.  I might be able to help.
