today i got a few minutes to get out and due some jetting and while it was idling i kept hearing a light knock noise .it ended up being the aluminum pulley [empi brand] . keyway slot in the pulley has already deformed allowing it to rock on the crankshaft.some red loctite will fix it in place and take up the play.now i will check it after every outing . so if you have one of these just grab it or the belt and rock it clockwise & anticlockwise too check it,would hate to see this come apart on someone.and if you have a strange knock back there at idle, check it out.

If you can turn it a bit, you haven't torqued the bolt up enough.

sometimes its the washer that deformes, and gives it slack, i had my pulley bolt loctited up, thinking all was well, but it still destroyed a nice scat pulley

I had the same problem with the washer....I went through 2 after-market chrome washers (pulley kept coming loose) before switching back to a stock washer.

thanks for the input . bolt was torqued to 50 ftlbs with a custom slightly thicker washer ,i have used this same parts bolt/washer many times before with no problem.what appears to of happend is from torque applied to the pulley the keyway milled slot started to widen [compression of aluminum ??]on the one side and after awhile with this play and all the accelerating/decelerating the pulley was able to walk back and fourth as it was no longer held propperly in place by the woodruf key
like i said now i have loctited the key in the crank and also the pulley groove.
retorqued to 50 ftlbs and will see how it goes.if it happens again i will try dropping pulley sizes which should take some load off of it.
now one thing i cannot say is if the pulley milled slot fit the woodruf key correctly the first time ,maybe from the very begining the milled slot could of been slightly larger to start with .good point is upon engine assembley is to check the fit and in doubt add a few drops of loctite too the pulley slot upon assembley.you can sure see how the very small things you don't think of come back to haunt you.
p.s pray for sun
