Ignition Switch/no Key
« on: September 29, 2004, 06:05:08 PM »
I recently purchased a 74 Type I to rework. It isn't a super beetle and it needs an engine. The guy I bought it from lost the key and the previous owner had installed an new ignition switch, so the key code on the door handle no longer matches the ignition. So, does anyone know how I can get the ignition switch out without a key?

Steering wheel off, wiper switch off, turn signal switch off, plastic column cover off, then switch out.

You don't need the key to get it out.  But you do have to compress a leaf spring to remove it.  The leaf spring is accessed from below by inserting a thin steel tool in a small hole.

Correction, the access hole to depress the leaf spring is near the top, about at 10 O'Clock.
