Super Shifter - Long Post.
« on: September 27, 2004, 05:48:02 PM »
Alright I thought I would do a write up about my experience at the Super Shifter bracket racing which I attended on Saturday. Can you say INTIMIDATION! I was one of the slowest cars out of 200 or so entrants (running in several classes (Super Pro,Hotrod,Super Gas etc) You definitely feel a lot more pressure at the line when there are a few hundred racers watching you that know when you screw up, heck I was even nervous in the water box! But you know what it didn't matter, everyone I spoke with was free to talk and always had good pointers for me.
I was very lucky to have some pit support on hand as well, Dave and Lorne were all over my car helping me every step of the way before the first time trial we tore down my IDA's installed larger vents (thanks Geoff for the loan) and did some re-jetting and then retimed the car. I did a second gear blow thru of the waterbox and launched at 3500 (as I do with radials) I bogged big time on the line BUT I ran a 13.95. I was HAPPY my first 13 sec run! But that wasn't good enough for my pit crew, some more tweaking, changed my muffler out for a stinger, a little more tire pressure, a 4500 launch (with less bog down) and I ran a 13.93 on my second run. Then like on any night of street legels there were some oil downs, breakdowns and delays. So after waiting nearly 6 hours (which is unheard of I'm told) we were called to stand by to run the first of our classes elimination's.
This is were the nerves really set in, I had dialed in my car for a 13.93 at around 2pm that day as it was my best run and I didn't think I could get much more out of it with my lack of track experience. But after to much time to second guess myself and the cooler weather I settled on a dial in of 13.87 (what I needed to get the tenth spot on the top 10 list ), and my crew chief Lorne had a feeling that I was going to get a better run this time out.
So at around 6:20pm I was ready to make my first elimination round pass. I was coached as much as possible on the lights, reaction, watching in my mirrors and even when to shift into 4th and I was ready. So I got to the waterbox and did my second gear blow thru and staged

congrats james.

it sounds like some serious good times. bracket racing sounds like where it's at. allthough it's cool to go for a quick 1/4, there is something to be said about a driver that has the car so dialed in he/she can run consistant #'s. and win.

Bracket racing is hard! Not something you can just jump into that's for sure! I saw guys losing by .001 od a second, you couldn't see that without a computer that's for sure!
