Thinkin Bout A Split Bug

Sooo.... not being around the vw scene to deeply in the last few years... I'm wondering what a restorable (minimal rust, some but not all the hard parts there) is selling for these days? I'd like a project and don't know if the budget can survive the purchase of a rolling bucket of bolts split window wise. If the samba is any price guide i'm up the creek, although I know they're harder than ever to find! thanks

I got mine for close to 8G's delieverd to my house.

Still needs a bunch of stuff, spent another G on it just for little parts to get it running and driving.

Good luck, most of them are in the US OF A.  Not many 'project' splits lying around.

yep, that's what I figured... it looks like from 3 to 6 thousand to get a shell with some parts, maybe running but depending on the body and original sheet metal. At some point it seems like it makes sense to find something partly restored if you could find it and finish it yourself. It always is a tough call for me to look at something with "fresh paint" and not be questioning what's underneath.

imho, i believe alot of the price has to do with how "correct" it is and how "complete" it is. i know it is like that for alot of cars, but even more so with a split.

there are some hard to come by split parts that can make or break the over-all look of the car. ribbed bumpers, correct semis, fenders, decklid, popesnose and doors are the bigguns.

i imagine sourcing parts would be tough to. possible, but time consuming and expensive.

the older the car, the more expensive it is to restore.

Yup, my split has a lot of the good parts still on it (lucky).

And the rest I don't really care about (except the popes nose which is eeeasy to get).

The rest, I'll get when I feel rich (ie, 52 interior, ack!  seats are sooo expensive!).  Until then, it's going to be slammmmmed, and driven

I think that's going to be my philosophy too! I had a car that kept getting moved from place to place as I moved or the place I had it stored wanted it out! Although I had a connection to it, just not the same as driving it and working on it at the same time. I've got a line from someone in the northern states who has decided the project has sat too long with no progress! Waiting for pics and a price. Then decide to take the loooong weekend roadtrip or ship it! I'll see how it goes.
