Traction Bar Pre-load
« on: September 11, 2004, 03:04:33 PM »
I've got some serious wheel hop issues when I drop the hammer in my 63 bug. Last winter built a 2017cc (78.4x90.5) It goes pretty good but I think i'm gonna start breaking stuff ie 6 volt tranny! Hopefully building a new swing this winter. I'm in the process of fabricating a drag bar like the one on the samba .Question is when you talk adjusting preload on the framehorns what are you trying to accomplish? do you want to adjust the down bars to make them longer or shorter than the original install position, in turn pushing the frame horns down to the ground or pulling them towards the cross bar?
thanks for any help , just discovered this site after GCVWShow sure i'll be usin' it lots

By preloading, you want to pull them up. So make the drop bars shorter by adjusting them.

my opinion on preload is it really isn't needed unless you are using a old school engine suport bar . if you think of what is happening is that the frame horns get flexed one way during acceleration, then snap back due to  the tension/load that was placed on them.this starts a oscillation effect .so all that is needed is a way too stop this action ,the new breed of frame horn to shock mount bars is a good example, air speed sels them.if there is still wheel hop there is many areas that can add to it,weak torsion bars/soft rubber torsion retainers, bad shocks, radia tires etc.
that is another thought is to try a damper on the frame horns.hmmm now i'm thinking of something.
