WTB Cold Start Valve for my 1978 bus
« on: April 17, 2017, 08:08:19 AM »
Mine sure is not spraying anything.   It gets electrical as expected during starting/cranking but no fuel comes out: not a spray, not a drop, nothing.   I can cold-start my bus using QuickStart fluid sprayed into the air intake behind the air filter (time-consuming, tricky timing and a little dangerous) or by disconnecting the electrical connection to the AFM and after starting the engine and it has run for about a minute I can reconnect that cable and head off but both these ways are little cumbersome (and the AFM disconnect trick likely would not work in really cold weather, I suspect).

All the usual places seem to out of stock on this item so I'm hoping there are some for sale out there, even used (assuming it works) is fine.   Note: I believe the same cold start valves work in any of the 1970's FI bus engines so if yours is not 1978, I'm fine with that.  Probably even the 80-83 Air Cooled vanagon/westy engines used the same one (but I'm not 100% certain of that).

Thanks for the help!

Why would you not take yours to a shop that specializes in injector servicing?  I took my injectors to NW Fuel Injection Service in Surrey.  Would be worth a call to see if they can do the cold start valve.

I would have to admit I had no idea there was any such kind of place or service.  I thought when they die then they are just dead.  Worth checking though considering they are not easy to come by anymore and the few that are out there (NOS) are apparently made from solid gold.....

Thanks!  I will check with NW Fuel Injection Service and see what they say.    I can easily take it over to them too since it's just sitting sadly on my work bench.

I'm sure most of you have seen this kind of thing but if not you might find this interesting.    So you have proved there is correct voltage and ground at your cold start valve while cranking your engine but no spray of fuel?    Here is my failing cold start valve and my new one.    Hmmmmmmm.  Can you see which is which?
