Mission Drags - Tech Inspection
« on: July 29, 2004, 04:12:11 AM »
Kool-aid guy asked in the engine section a couple of q's about what's allowed at Mission Raceway on street night.  I thought I'd start this topic for any newbies who want to ask what's legal and what's not for the big Bug invasion Aug 13.

To answer Kool-aid's q's, you don't need a battery box, but in a Bug you have to make sure its covered by the seat.  If you don't have a seat, some form of cover is required, like a battery box.  The idea is that if your car rolls over they don't want to risk battery acid dripping all over you.  The battery must also be clamped down.

Fuel filters aren't illegal, but if you have one in your engine comp you will most likely fail on too much rubber fuel line.  The rule is no more than 12\" of rubber on the whole car.  Pretty tough to do on any Bug, let alone one with dual carbs.  They are fairly lenient on this rule, I've got plenty of rubber on mine and I've never been turned down because they can't see it under the car.
There is now a really high quality rubber fuel line available from ARP (Mopac) that is NHRA legal in lengths beyond 12\".  Its probably a good idea to use this stuff in any daily driver just for safety.  Call up Airspeed, maybe they carry it.

Oh ya, and what about line lock burnouts? Can you only do a burnout if you have a line lock? or can you still drop the back end the soup and giver'?

Mike, again

You can only do a burnout in the water if you have slicks.  They won't let you in with radials.  There's really no point with radials because they don't get grippyier if you do a burnout.  All they do is get water up in the tread, then you bring water up to the line making it slippery for all cars.
You don't need a line-lock to do a burnout in the water.  I think you will find there's so little traction in the water with slicks that the car doesn't move much.  I don't have LL, I just dump the clutch in 2nd and move my left foot over and lightly touch the brake pedal to hold it in place.

Helmets required for cars that go 13.999 or faster.  I can't remember what snell rating is the minimum.

A roll bar is required if you go 11.999 or faster.

Seat belts required in all classes.  Stock belts are fine as long as they are in good condition.  If you went out and bought the wide multicoloured 5 or 6 point racing belts, they have to be 2 years old or newer.

Street legal tires or slicks are ok.  Don't show up with bald tires.  The absolutely always count lug nuts on every wheel.  Don't show up missing any.

Brakes are required on at least 2 wheels, although I think anyone with only 2 wheel brakes is kinda stupid given the speeds.  Brake lines are required.  They don't look at them.

If you have dual carbs, there has to be at least one return spring on each carb.  Most carbs already have them built-in.  Know where they are so you can point it out.

All watercooled cars must drain their antifreeze.   I tell them I've drained mine.  Once the guy didn't get it.

Hehehe, my first trip to Puallup(sp) I went to a Target store and told him I needed to get a radiator for my friends 64 bug, so he looked it up, went in the back and grabbed one claiming it fit the description, I laughed and walked out, poor guy had no idea!

Thanks for the info guys, I guess i can cross off the roll cage, the helmet, and hell with my 1600 I probably don't even need a seat belt at the sloth like speeds I'd be running!(comparitively)

Any idea on what the ruling is for glass?

Is only a front windshield needed?  And a full face helmet if there is no other window glass?

As for lug nuts..the first time i did a street legal at misson..i went 2 watch...as i went to pay they said racers that way..so off i went..i i had to open my hood with a screw driver (front end damage) and i had 3 lug nuts on both back wheels (killed locking lug nuts in the morning of that day with 12 point socket) and i made 5 passes..no questions asked..by the looks of things...times have SOMEWHAT chaged..but i bet that if you dont have a broken wind sheld or oil/gas pissing out of your car in the tech line up your ok....for Street legals anyhow..i was..

You got no side glass????  If so, you need a window net to keep your arms inside the car if it rolls.

Hub caps and trim rings removed .  Windows rolled up (during your run).  All loose idems removed from the car. White shoe polish for putting your car # on the window( or borrow it from the guy next to you).    Pen for the entry form . Flash light because it's dark when you pack up and go home.  All things that I allways seem to forget.

Now , .....as far as water burn outs with street tires , during a real race event it is never allowed.  But these friday night S L drags  is another story.  The guys working the track actually try and get me to go into the water box with my street tires.  I never do because I know that the next car could be one of you guys that actually do run slicks and me putting water down on the track in front of you would just be stupid and dangerous. Be cool ,  avoid the water with your street tires.
