Bumper rechroming
« on: February 14, 2015, 08:44:46 AM »
Just wanted to see if  anybody has had their bumpers rechromed in the last year or so ago?
The excellent quality repro's are getting pretty expensive now

I'm just curious if it's still better to buy the new ones or have some redone

Thoughts?
Thanks for any help
Russ

The best results will be chroming factory bumpers. The nicer the cores, the nicer the final result. The main blades are the hardest to find these days. They have a stamp in the middle/back, usually a VW logo. I use Dependable Plating for all my stuff, he's always been good to me. The key is not to grind them for some special deal. I suspect around $1200 Pr, with overriders. I paid $700 back in 1996 when i had my old 67 bumpers done. They still look great. I just checked Wolfsburg West, around $1000 a pair landed here but no stock right now. They are very, very nice. They are on Darren Dilleys 55 and are mint.

I have used Dependable plating a few times too. Good to deal with and more reasonably priced than most platers.

i used wolfsburg West ones on the 55 as well and was happy with the quality for the most part.
like you said i just checked their site and they were about a grand and i was like damn, maybe i'll rechrome a set
my car only came with a rear bumper and i have not looked it over really well.
i'll pull it apart and talk to dependable and see what they have to say

have not been on here in a while nice to see the familiar names again
thanks Lanny and Brian

I used WW on my zwitter, the only thing I wasn't happy with was the paint on the back side, looked like rattle can primer. So i had the backs painted. otherwise still mint shape and been on the car for 7 yrs...

phoning around a bit superior is over a 1000.00 per bumper
dependable said roughly 6-700.00 each
like Lanny said for a 1000.00 I can have repros landed here.
my only issue I had was when  I painted the back side of the Wolfsburg ones,  the tape peeled the chrome off:(

thanks for the help guys
as it sits if I rechrome a set I only have a rear bumper and need to find a good core for the front
