Exploding Glass?
« on: June 05, 2014, 01:33:44 PM »
Yesterday I went to pick up a side window for my bay window and as soon as I touched it. It exploded into a million pieces all over the van and my garage. I don't know how I escaped not getting cut, but I did.

Any idea why this happened?

Thanks.

old glass and temperature? We had a station wagon at one time, and the car was in the carport, kind of cool under there. Dad pullled out the car and we had to wait for someone to come out. It was about 10 minutes, but when they got in the car and slammed the door.... the rear window exploded! I know it's meant to do that rather than shards of sharp pointy stuff, but still a shocker. Glad you're ok!

We used to run through junk yards with broken bits of porcelain, like from the top of a spark plug, and even just lightly throwing it against a side window will shatter it. It's amazing how easily some glass breaks. Other the other hand, I usually kick out the side windows and rear windows on a bug and they will land on the floor and NOT break. It all depends on what part takes the impact.
