I'm sure all Air Speed members will join me in sending our condolences to Geoff and his family on the passing of his Dad Roy Peterson. An award winning political cartoonist, he worked at the Vancouver Sun for 47 years until 2009 and often having his work published in McLeans Magazine and others. In 2004 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and had won seven National Newspaper Awards for his work, the most in the history of the awards. As one article put it:
“The dean of Canadian political cartoonists . . . is quite a gentle guy for a cartoonist. I’ve often found that kind of odd,” Mosher said in a telephone interview.
Don’t be mistaken, though. There is a steely quality to Peterson and his work. That’s not only because he’s considered a master craftsmen who can pull off impeccable cross-hatch ink drawings, unlike a lot of less technically gifted cartoonists. It’s because his editorial cartoons have a certain wickedness.
Peterson has had a way of putting things in perspective. His incisive pen has entertained Vancouver Sun readers with brilliance and honour through almost half a century of tumultuous history. He will continue to cast his own long shadow."
