Bye Bye Hotrod Rake
« on: June 28, 2004, 07:32:08 AM »
Yesterday I found out how to get a 62 bug with a stiff suspension airborne. Don't pay attention and don't slow down for those stupid high but not wide speed bumps. Hit it and whoooom! Pretty sure I caught air on that one as my billet budvase comes crashing to the floor pans and as my seatbelts hold me in.. So time to crank up that beam just a hair...

In time you will learn to watch for that stuff, and drive a little slower on roads you dont know so well.

The rake is not like a mullet, which should be a jailable offence, the rake is an essential component to driving your cal custom car. Preserve the rake :)

Its not so much the speedbumps but the hitting expansion joints on bridges. Its kind of funny other people like the rake to but now I'm a bit partial..
Time will tell.

if you are having trouble with the expansion joints then your ass end is probably too high or too stiff, you will get an exageratted hop if that is the case, you dont need a lot of rake, just enough so people can tell you have some.

Don't listen to them Kirin! Raise it up to the height we discussed tonight, and it will not only handle and ride better, but it will also look better! Leave the rake for the T buckets!

Ya Kirin, raise it up. You don't want to look good in it do you? I suggest stock height for those that can't handle it.....hell maybe you should sell it and buy yourself a 2002.

I think Kirin needs to add a 2002 to the stable, but not sell the Bug to get it. Everyone needs a vintage German car that rides, drives, and sounds like an old tractor, as well as something civilised, and comfortable, and with well rounded performance!

Why the aversion to having a car that sits at a decent height, that handles well, AND looks good? Kirin had a jack under it tonight, and after a couple of pumps, it looked just about perfect. Nowhere near stock height, but would probably ride MUCH better than it does now. He also needs to drop the rear end a bit to fix the positive camber issue, as well as balance the whole look out.

I never understand why someone would put up with a buckboard ride, that bounces you all over the road, just to look \"cool\". I don't get it. I've got Koni adjustables, urethane bushings, Suspension Techniques springs, and stiff Yokohamas on my 02. It sits about an inch lower than stock, and actually rides better than it did before! Nothing wrong with having a properly balanced car.

  Al - Just my 20.02 cents ;)

The car is now slightly raised.
Not stock height but now I won't rattle my teeth going over. My buckboard ride was virtually going \"SHUDDER!\" through intersections and going \"KA-THUMP KA -THUMP!\"
I won't even start on my own quest for a bit more automobile refinement but to each their own.

Yeah, his body will heal mostly, but oh man, that ain't fun! 50? I'm 28 years old, and I've owned 30 cars, from MG's, to VW's, to Volvo's, BMW's, and even a Porsche or 2. I've also had major back surgery, which kinds forces the issue on a decent ride for me. Anyway, Kirin's car looks great at it's slightly taller than it was 2 days ago height, so he can still look \"cool\" B)

Brian, here's a link to Buckboards for ya'. http://www.palouse.net/mcctwigg/buckboardkit.htm

Who's Stephan?

Lots of my cars have been daily beaters, not all of them have been nice! I've owned at least 8 different ice racing Rabbits, 2 road race cars, a TSD rally car, and that number also includes a pair of motorcycles.

I've never bought a car to simply clean it up and resell it, either. All of mine were bought to be functional cars for myself, or projects. Hell, I've lost money on damn near every one of them.

No, I was living in Ontario then, and racing in the STP/Prestone Challenge on Rice Lake, in Peterborough. I raced in 92, 93, 94, and 95, before moving out here in 96.

Al , there is a club based in the lower mainland that races up at barns lake just outside of Ashcroft about 4hrs. from here.  They have a web site , I think it's \"carsonice.com\"

Interesting. I'll have to look into that. I've always run Rabbits in past, but I think it might be fun to race a 2002 or even a 320i. RWD on ice would be a riot!
