carb suggestions
« on: June 25, 2013, 07:04:01 AM »
I just put a 1641 with a mild cam & headwork in my 70 beetle. It doesnt seem to like the 30 pict 1 which is probably too small anyway. Has anyone had good luck with any particular single carb? I have a pair of kadrons but would rather have a simple single asthe car does see some offroading as well as being driven year round

Too bad you can't use the Kadron kit, because IMO, they are good carbs for a small motor.

It's an insane world out there... and I'm proud to be part of it!

in my personal experience, a single 40 idf is the only way to go.

but  even i, turned my back on the gospel of weber carbaratori , turned to the dark side, and installed the devils own kadrons. now my beetle suffers from driveability better than stock, and sinfull 30 mpg economy.

don't fool yourself. k-dogs really are the setup for small engines. just use the aluminum manifolds so you can hog them out inside to increase the plenum volume so you prevent the running on 2-cyl while idling problem.

Dammit, I was really hoping for a single even if just for cold weather & choke. My buggy with a single port runs perfectly on duals but the initial setup was a bit of a pain. Are dual h40/44 eis too big? Im not a fan of crossbar linkage but have scat linkage on my other car & it seems alot more reliable...just not sure if it will work with the h40/44.

with my single weber i just made an airbox that drew air off the #2 cyl, using that pipe that the car came with, for cold weather. it worked great even in 10 below. as for chokes, you just have to teach yourself how to use the accelerator pump to act as a choke.

I guess I will order linkage for the duals & try them.right now I just wish I could get the 30pict1 to idle. It worked fine on previous motor...3 days ago but will not consistently idle well on the new motor.

the problem with running a stock carb on even a mild performance motor isn't so much the carb as it is the intake manifold inner diameter, even more so on single ports.the manifold was made that small to keep the velocity up for throttle response and keeping the fuel atomized, it also acts as a built in rev-limiter. if you don't believe me, check out the carb section in "how to hot rod vw engines". i realize the carb choice in the book are grossly outdated, but the theory still applies

You can get the new Kadrons with a choke now. I'm a huge fan of Kads. Great for a small to mild engine and easy to tune.

The fresh motor I bought has a pair of kads. Next week I will be doing the swap. The supplied linkage is buttfu.. ugly but good enough to test with. If the setup tunes well I will get or make better linkage.

Well, the kads are on.i havent yet driven it but it seems to be idling better and after synching the throttle response seems adequate. What distibutors are kadron fans using? I was using a pertronix svda but no vac signal from the kads except for full manifold vac. I have chinese and 009 but really dont want to use it.

I'm using a duel point Mallory, mechanical advance, no vacuum. Timing set at 12 and 28, no hesitation

I forgot to add, it is on a 1760 with a 100 cam and Kadrons. I got the short block from Geoff, when Airspeed was still going
