Aircare frustration
« on: April 29, 2013, 04:55:13 PM »
My turn to get screwed around with Aircare.  :33:
I run a rebuilt H30/31 carb from a reputable builder with a 009 on a stock 1600. A few days ago, I passed all but idle CO which was at over 7%. Today, I went in again after I leaned out the idle mixture and bumped the idle. It idled too low for the first test, at around 700+ so that might have been part of the problem. Today I set it to ~850. As for mixture, I turned it more then 1/8 but less than 1/4 turn, somewhere in between.
I had my doubts, but the idle test passed, in fact the CO dropped drastically. I've read somewhere that 1/4 turn might yield around 3% drop, but I shaved double that. However, I now failed the driving CO. WTH?

I should add that the first test was at South Van location, while the second was at East Van. Also, the first time, I got in quicker.
The second time, I idled for over 20 to half an hour minutes before finally getting in. I hang around for the second test and he did it in 2nd gear, like he should.

Your idle should be closer to 1100 rpm.

Your idle should be closer to 1100 rpm.

But still, it failed the driving test second time aruond, idle shouldn't matter?

I have also failed twice. I am at the end of Air Care rope.

Very frustrating.

Dual Carbs, 110 cam. Any suggestions would be great.

Post your VIN or registration number so we can look at the test results.

Tried to get a free retest today, almost got it, but they said no after the manager phoned for approval. So, I ran it anyway to get some consistency. And it failed very similar to yesterday(driving CO) so I reckon I need a smaller main jet.

I've wrestled with this for years (31 tests in 10 years).
Now I take it to Hub Motors in Abby and they get it to pass one way or another.
Last year I had my 2160 w/ Weber 48s in the car & they farmed it out to Key Imports in Abby who also got that motor to pass.

Oh my...., those are some serious Hydrocarbons you are making there, can you tell us about the age/condition of your engine and what the last compression test said?, have you ever set the valves? Where's the timing set? The idle's pretty lean on the second test, when you pull each plug wire from the cap and put it back in a few seconds later does the idle not change for a wire or two?

Batan, check your inbox, sounds like it's time for the magic carb again ;) Last time for sure!

I passed mine today.  :band1:  Split the carb to blow stuff out and ended up taking out the 120 main jet out of there and swapping it for 112 to pass. Still though, it put out worse/richer numbers than the 116 it passed with last year.

try advancing the initial timing  5 to 10 degrees,(just for the test, reset after leaving).for idle failures, be sure the throttle valve (butteryfly) is not uncovering more than half the idle port.those with later carbs set your idle speed at the air bypass screw. if your waiting for the test in the line up,keep the revs up 1200 to1500 to build up heat, colder motors are more likely to fail. were lucky here on the rock....no testing.
