swing axle tubes
« on: January 15, 2012, 08:26:05 AM »
hot do you get these things off? i'm replacing the diff in my '68 baja and the factory manual is older than 68, so the axle tubes are different. i can't see the u-joint behind that metal cup/shield welded onto the tube, so i'm guessing i need to remove the axle bearing from the axle. i'm also guessing i need a puller or an elephant to do this. be gentle with me, its my 1st swingaxle teardown!

Yes you will need a puller now and pull the tube (and bearing) of the axle. Then you can get at the circlip inside which will release the axle. So what are you changing?  Adding a super diff ?  You will need to reuse the ring gear and readjust the backlash and bearing preload . If you have a bentley it will cover this. All swingaxles are basically the same procedure.
