Bear's 1963 Herbie Replica
« on: December 17, 2011, 09:45:02 PM »
I took me 5 years but on Aug. 27th with the help of my friend Paul (a retired mechanic who helped me out a lot) I finally finished it! I started out with a sad looking 63 Canadian Standard that I got for a six pack ...

and slowly it began to transform ...

into THIS!!

Congrats on finishing your project.....car looks great. Curious why you didn't paint the interior metal white as well

Thanks for the compliment. In the original 1969 -1980 Disney movies Herbie is a 1963 sunroof Beetle (ragtop) with a L87 or Pearlweiss (Pearl White) exterior paint job and battleship grey interior. I wanted my car to be as accurate to the original movies as possible. The car is an off white, almost a light beige colour although in some photos depending on how the light is, it does look white.

This last October I actually got to see one of the cars used in "Herbie Goes Bananas" (photo below) and I have to say ... I totally nailed "the look."

Very cool....I wondered if that was done to be "correct" for a herbie car. There used to be an early 60's  rag running around the island that was a herbie rep car; It never failed to draw a crowd.

Yeah, he definitely draws a crowd, and a lot of people taking photos of him and with him. However, since I live in Northern BC he's now tucked away for the winter in his little garage. It makes waiting for spring all the more exciting.

Great Job!! The car looks fanastic.

The grey interior was done to minimize glare. If they had used white it would not have shown as well in the movie.

Please don't anyone get offended by this but as I've had several people ask me if I'd be interested in selling my car I thought I'd make this known. I just spent the last 5 years building Herbie and so far I've only had the chance to drive him since he was finished at the end of last August for 3 months so I'm not about to sell him any time soon. My plan is to keep him as long as possible and pass him on to my sons when I'm done having fun with him.
