Parts Scrounging?
« on: May 27, 2004, 10:19:41 PM »
This summer I intend on camping through the Okanagan for the first time in a long time. My plan is to travel from Vancouver to such areas such as: Lynton - Merrit - Kamloops - Salmon Arm - Vernon - Kelowna - Osoyoos - Princeton. Along the way I was hoping to also perhaps find some wreckers or fields full of Type 2's that I could scrounge some parts from. So my question is: Does anyone know of any worthwhile places to check out in the Okanagan?

Thanks.

In Vernon look up Dave at Partly Dave's Neighbourhood Garage.  He's usually got a few Type 2s hanging around his shop.  The attic is full of parts.  But the real good stuff is at his house.  I've only been there once.  He's probably still got his oval.

In Kelowna find O'Neil Motors.  He's got a tiny yard behind his shop at the north end of town.

About 10 years ago, instead of returning to Van via Merrit, I took a detour east on highway 33 at Kelowna and connected to highway 3 at Rock Creek.  Along this road I was looking for derelict Beetles (only saw 3-4), but the number of Type 2s was amazing.  Mostly pre-67s.  There's lots of remote farms along there, and when a car dies and they want to get rid of it, they have to pay to have it taken away.  There aren't any free scrap car removal guys there because of the cost of shipping the cars to the crusher.  So instead, they just park the cars in fields.
